Datzun76 Posted August 13, 2002 Share #49 Posted August 13, 2002 Well at least we agree on the ugly bumpers. That is why you do not see it on my front end and i will eventually remove the back one as well even though it leaves me in a bad situation if I ever get hit from behind. The bumpers are pretty heavy and would guess they are a large part of the weight increase. Alfadog Posted August 13, 2002 Share #51 Posted August 13, 2002 The bumpers are pretty heavy and would guess they are a large part of the weight increase. Definitely.A nice look would be without any bumper I think. However then if you get hit from behind like you said you do have quite a large problem ... Zvoiture Posted August 13, 2002 Share #53 Posted August 13, 2002 Rare in Au maybe...not rare here. They are everywhere for really cheap. You can't GIVE 280's away in California. Nobody wants them. Several reasons: Theya re NOT smog exempt (280's are 75-78 and exemption stops at 73), nobody likes messing with the FI as it is expensive to work on and has a reputation of not being able to 'mod' it for performance...then there's that weight thing...There are a half dozen 280's under $500 within 20 miles of my house that I know of. There's a fairly complete one down the street for $100 (auto).BTW, if you want to see a 280 without bumpers...see my car in gallery...steve77

Datzun76 Posted August 13, 2002 Share #55 Posted August 13, 2002 Well I was feeling good about my car till he belittled the hell out of it . Yeah there are plenty of 280s in the US. It appears California must have more Z's than any other state. Down here in Florida they are not as common. I live in a town with a population over 1 million and in the past year I have seen maybe 3 or 4 classic z's total. If you do find them here they are all rusted to hell. 2ManyZs Posted August 13, 2002 Share #56 Posted August 13, 2002 Ok guys, we can argue till we need to upgrade our computers on the subject. No one is belittling anyones car. It is a simple fact that as delivered from the factory the 240 was slightly quicker due to its weight advantage. Once you start to modify a 280 even by taking off one bumper you will be taking enough weight off to make a BIG difference in performance. I ran my 73 240 against a brand new 280ZX Turbo many years ago, only stayed with him till he hit 2nd gear and the boost kicked in, then it was all over but the crying.I raced a 75 280 in Improved Touring that would have blown away 75% of the 240's I could have come across on the street, but compared to 240's built to the same specs I was slower. One reason was the handicap of weight and the FI. The chassis of the later 240-280 is built of thicker gauge metal than the early 240's (70-71) so you will have a hard time comparing them. And you will have a hard time getting any FI cars to turn 7K rpm's like a 240 will. So, what I'm saying is you can't compare apples and oranges if one is a hybrid. Stock is stock and modified is modified. One modification and it is no longer stock. Right? The only way to find out who's car is faster is to put them head to head and see who's comes out on top. That's how the IHRA and NHRA got started and all other forms of motorsports, to find out who's car is faster.

St.stephen Posted August 13, 2002 Share #59 Posted August 13, 2002 I will be strapping a carburated L28 into the belly of my early 74 260. Does that count?
