Only 240's ?????????????

In 1974 after I got out of the service I purchased a new 260Z Emerald Green exterior with light tan interior . It was one of the most gorgeous and it was one quickest and smooth running Z's I have ever owned but in 1975 traded for a 76 280Z Copper brown color with tan interior. That car could run, in fact while racing a Camaro Z28 on the interstate in Texas I snapped the speedometer cable and definitely beat the Chevy. I 've owned several other 280Z's and appreciated them and loved driving them as any 240Z I've owned and there has been quite a few but out of all the Z cars I wish I could have the 74 260Z emerald green back and still be driving it now!!!!!!!!!!!! To me that was the Z that got away!!!

the '76 - '78 280 z or zx didn't make it to NZ (unless privatly imported)

240z's came out with 5 speeds this end of the world

also the 240z hp was rated in gross hp not net (I think I got that around the right way) basicly to todays standards (and to that of the 280) the 240z has approx 137hp

I would own a dozen 280's if it were not for the smog thing! I would not even consider buying a 240 except that I CAN NOT do what I want to the motor and register it unless I buy something built before '74. So I am going to have to buy a rinky-dink little tinny 240 in order to build my hot-rod fuel injected 280 motor. I just like the way a 280 feels, and I think frame stress from hard driving is a non-issue with them.

I've been having a chat with another member in another forum and the subject of originality came up, so I'd like to pose you all a question.

Just how far can you go with mods?

If you install a 280 engine into a 240, as so many appear to do, how can it still be referred to as a 240?????????????

After all, weren't z's named in accordance with their engine capacities??????????????????????????

Very good point you make. I have recently purchased my first 240Z. It had the original L24 in front of an auto. It is in the process of being totally gutted and rebuilt body wise. Apart from the import L28 I'm putting in it, it will run all standard 240Z equipment. Yes it is modified but I' am only taking the best out of each model and improving on the 240. e.g. electronic distributor and engine from 280. Is mine 'original' not by somes standards but all parts are from the 'Zed' family and I'm proud of it.

personally ; 240 was named off the engine size but it is still a 240 no matter what you put in, 240 signifies the age of the car. I personally am putting a turboed skyline engine in and won't be referring to it as a 250zt, it will be a 240z

Hey there ZORRO.

Of course you're proud of your Z. Each and every one of us is proud of their Z's, (otherwise we'd probably have a LESSER make such as a Mustang------a dime a dozen).

However, my point is, why buy a 240 then fit it out with 280 components?? Why not simply buy a 280 and be done with it.

My intention is to keep my 260 as original as possible. I'd like to see most Aussie Z owners modify their Z's to hell and gone. Then, as Z's become rarer, a modified Z might leave me for dead at the lights but I'll be laughing all the way to the bank as the value sky rockets on ORIGINALS.

To each there own, but on this topic I am with you, in keeping my 240z as original as possible. Cars in this condition can only go up in price with time as they become harder to come by.

Agreed, and I'm not even old !!!!

If I wanted to go sticking plastic all over my car, I'd buy a civic. WIth a Z, not only do I get a classic car that is considered one of the most influential cars of all time, but I also get a car which will APPRECIATE !
