October 11, 200717 yr comment_224146 These cars are now so old that standard rates for selected jobs really don't apply. (ie. flat rates). Most shops will charge time and materials... so depending on how experienced they are in doing that job, what condition all the bolts/studs/nuts are in, it might take two hours or it might take 12...With most shops charging between $85.00 and $125.00 per hour - -- I'd recommend taking the car to a shop that specializes in older Z's and asking them to look at it - then give you a written estimate.Carl B..... or you could do it yourself.... October 11, 200717 yr comment_224154 .... or you could do it yourself....+ 1. Then it will just cost you the price of the gasket (if nothing else breaks while changing it). October 11, 200717 yr comment_224157 If this problem exists on the the car you're considering buying, I'd check and make sure it's actually a bad gasket. Manifold gaskets that are properly mounted generally don't develop leaks. Could be that the studs are already stripped/broken causing the exhaust leak. October 11, 200717 yr comment_224162 As Stephen pointed out, the last stud closest to the firewall is very prone to pop, and it is a most likely cause. If the car is an EFI model, the EGR portion of the intake manifold casting is prone to develop a hole at the bottom-allowing exhaust to leak directly through.Start up the car(after it has cooled) and feel around the back end of both manifolds and try to find the leak with your hands. Will Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/25813-need-help-on-buying-s30z/#findComment-224162 Share on other sites
October 12, 200717 yr Author comment_224242 thanks for all the information and the welcome. I understand that S30z are very old and that you will run into some sort of problem. This goin to be my first car witch probably isnt very reliable but I just think Z's are awsome. This is wat the guy told me who was selling the vehicle: "Things you should know about the car, the front had a small accident, you can see in the picture, but it's a pretty easy fix. The only rust in the car is where it got hit, and it's very small. The frame is straight, the body is straight, the engine is super clean. The car needs an exhaust manifold gasket, front brakes, and two rear tires. I can get some used ones if the price is right. The car just got a new clutch. It has a 280Z motor with dual Weber carbs. It is smog free in the state of CA so no need to worry about it. There is a common problem with these cars having the rubber strap that holds the pumpkin of the differental tearing and it causes a loud clunk in the rear, I just replaced that part so you don't have to worry about it. If you have any more questions I'll be glad to answer them as best as possible. As far as price, I'm taking any offers, but please don't low ball me. Best offer will take it. I want this car gone ASAP so don't be afraid to offer something!"Just wanted to know your 2cents if it would be something i could make semi reliable. thanks for your help Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/25813-need-help-on-buying-s30z/#findComment-224242 Share on other sites
