Posted October 18, 200717 yr comment_225090 Alright, I recognize that I may be a doofus for asking this question, but I'd rather look a little silly than do the wrong thing and have to take everything apart and clean it all over again.I am reassembling the door hardware and window hardware and would like to lube the window assemblies. What kind of grease have you guys used in the past? I'm hoping that there is some kind that doesn't have the stench of wheel bearing grease.Anyone help me? October 18, 200717 yr comment_225092 Good question. I have been using white lube for years for this type of application and many others . I haven't noted any smell and it stays put. I use the same stuff on the friction points for the drum brakes where the shoes contact the backing plates. October 18, 200717 yr comment_225101 A good choice is the white lube as mentioned, official description is "PH" grease.Castrol PH: -"A white zinc oxide grease to NLGI#3 consistancy providing scuff protection for auto body hardware including door catches, boot mechanisms and bonnet control mechanisms, gear shift controls and drum brakes."No smell and very sticky.I also use this stuff behind door catches and hinges. It allows you to slide the hardware around to achieve ideal door gap alignment without scratching that fresh paint job.Any excess that squeezes out can be easily wiped off with a rag or degreaser wash later on. October 18, 200717 yr Author comment_225106 Thanks guys. Is this a Pep Boys/NAPA type of part, or is there a better place to purchase it? October 18, 200717 yr comment_225121 I think I remember seeing it at Sears Hardware. I'm sure auto stores would have it as well. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/25906-what-kind-of-grease-for-window-assembly/#findComment-225121 Share on other sites
October 18, 200717 yr comment_225123 I've always thought of the white grease as being "lithium" grease:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium-based_greaseWhile I can't say I've used it on the car I have used it on garage door tracks to keep them opening and closing smoothly.
