I need to get my 78 up to "daily driver" condition, which it almost is, but I need a good shop somewhere near me that won't charge an arm and a leg for a possible engine rebuild or head rebuild. Anyone know of any good spots? I've normally used the same mechanic for the last 4 cars I've had, but I really want to take care of the Z with someone who knows Z's and won't charge too much. I'm in Covina, 91723, CA. Thanks to anyone who can help. Money is an issue, so maybe someone out there in Los Angeles County has a good mechanic that they've trusted their Z to. Since I just got the Z, I also need to have someone do a bumper to bumper inspection on it to tell me what I need to replace. Again, I don't trust my usual mechanic for this, and he doesn't really do bumper to bumper diagnostics anyway.

How much do you think it will cost to do "rebuild" your engine and machine your head? Ballpark figure is about $1600 plus. I had a guy here in San Diego go a job for my friend here recently. He did a great job but it was not cheap.

Check with Elvan Meneses at Z Car Speciality in Upland. 909 981 1074. He's been my mechanic for the few things I don't do myself for the last 20+ years. He's knowlegable and fair.

I second Stephens rx. I took my Z there at Stephens advice. Elvin rebuilt my motor, put in a new clutch and installed my struts. First class work, but not inexpensive. However he is reasonable. As always, when you need someone that works exclusively on a marque, that person's knowledge costs more, But I have found that you get what you pay for. Z car speciality is not too far from you in Covina.

....Don't know if you are willing to drive out to Glendale, but I recommend Sunrise Z. I've been going there for years. They know what's up. Art and Mike are the nicest guys to deal with. Very knowledgable.

Sunrise Z is ok. And if distance is an issue, perhaps from West Covina to Glendale is closer than to Upland.

West Covina to Upland is about 15-16 miles and West Covina to Glendale is about 25.

I think the car was stolen so I am not sure if he needs a shop.

Hmm...maybe the theives will rebuild the engine and then he can recover the vehicle...if so, awfully thoughtful of them...

That's what I wish for every time I get home... Maybe it will be in my parking space all fixed up...

...Just for the record Sunrise Z is more than OK. About a year ago ownership was changed, and believe me, that has made a HUGE difference.
