Looking For A 280Z

I've never owned a 280Z, but have always wanted to own one. Bought a 79 Rx7 when I was younger. Anyway's I came across 2 cars on E-bay that I found intresting, both are in the completed listings now. A 1975 280z professionaly restored for $10,200.00 reserve not met. I contacted this seller after the auction and he said he sold the car for $13,500 (auction completed oct22). And a 1977 280Z professionally restored sold for $10,200.(auction completed Oct12). Just hoping to get some feedback on these two cars to help me in the future. Is this the right price range for these cars? Or should I look for something else? I'm looking to buy one that has been restored like these two. Any feedback, or advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure if I have added these links properly.

Well If your looking for one thats in mint condition with very low miles, then yes, those price ranges sound about right to me. The way it usually always works out is 1) either you pay the price all in one shot by getting a perfect one that needs nothing, or 2) you give a Z a good home that needs a little attention and pay as you go along after purchasing it for a lower price by fixing her up. Basically it comes down to what your skill level is mechanically and if your willing to take the time or want to do work on your new/old Z Either way it's not a cheap hobby . What hobby is?

Way back when I was Z Car Shopping, I wanted to find one with low miles and NO rust. I didn't care if it needed attention mechanically as I enjoy wrenching on them and after waiting a while patiently, I found my blue beauty in Gilbert, AZ. (Low miles, beautiful paint job, No rust, but did need mechanical attention. Now I got my 280Z running and riding as good as she looks. Like new

For completely restored Z's those prices are along the right lines.

Though, I would also look for 240z, and even 280zx Turbo Z's :devious:

Thank's for the advice. I think finding one without rust, but in need of some engine work might be the way to go. I also like the 240Z, and the ZX. It will be hard to buy one without seeing it up close to check for rust in the problem area's. Not many in decent shape close to home. If anyone knows of a good place to look for one please let me know.

If you wouldn't mind paying shipping charges to where you live, people here never mind looking at rigs if you find one around someone from the forums. That is always a possibility.

That would be appreciated. Weather is starting to change up here probably wouldn't get to drive the car until next spring. So it gives me time to find the right one.

Yeah, considering the ugly weather season is around the corner :sick: I'd wait till next late spring when the weather is nice and you can go out and play around with your newly purchased Z. Rushing into it now and having to store it right after just buying it would majorly bum you out I recently just got mine all prepped for winter storage again I hate this time of year Gotta put all my toys away

Best place to look is down south obviously. I found mine in Arizona. Shipping cost of course will be a factor for you too. If your very lucky you may come across one that is closer north to you (someone who is also a Z Nut that stored it every winter) Just have to be patient and keep your eyes open.

When I had mine shipped from AZ. to me in MN. I did terminal to terminal instead of door to door to cut the cost down a little. Turned out to be a bad idea as My poor Z ran sooo rough because of the mechanical attention it needed I had to limp it home from way out in minneapolis to my house in St. Paul, MN. I remember I even had to stop and take a break because about half way home, I learned it had engine cooling issues and noticed the temp. guage was starting to read pretty hot and I didn't want to risk cracking the head :nervous: The tires were so old on it from sitting for who knows how long and I noticed the tread was beginning to separate :paranoid: and the tires were WAY off balance when I was driving on the highway home, it felt like I was driving on railroad ties all the way home. I remember my brother who was riding with me that day was laughing because my wrist watch was chattering from holding onto the steering wheel .

Anyway sorry to go off on my story telling but when I did get my Z home that day from that nervous drive I thought "I should have just spent the extra damn money on the door to door delivery" . Something for you to think about if you get one that needs a little work and your going to have it shipped.

Not sure if you were successfull in your search for a 280z, however, I have one for sale and will posting an ad here soon for it. She's turnkey...ready to go. Most of the physical restore has been completed, she already turns heads everywhere I drive it. Great paint job, nearly a full interior restoration, custom headers, high flow cat, rhino glass pack, new tires, plenty of photos and answers to any questions you could possible have. I hate to sell the car, I just don't get her out as much as she deserves now that I have a son...and a daughter on the way.
