Well, just got back from the DMV. God, I love that place!!! I want to work there.......just kidding.

Anyway, I have an answer for Red Dog. They told me that the only way they can grant a temporay permit is if the car is currently registered in California. I hope that answers your question.

Apparently California law is different that Indiana law :stupid: (Of course...)

I have been through this kind of situation once, on the other end. I gave a running car away to one of those charities who are always asking for cars. They sold the car to someone who immediately curb-stoned it to some unsuspecting 19 year old kid. Six months later I received a letter from the Indianapolis Police Department informing me that they had RECOVERED MY STOLEN CAR!!!

Under Indiana laws the "title" that you have would be considered INVALID, and the car would still legally belong to the person whose name is printed on the title. (The last registered owner)

The gentleman who had bought the car (last) eventually tracked me down, and I ended up signing a (notarized) power of attorney form so that he could apply for a duplicate title (which still had my name on it) and then transfer that title to himself.

To add insult to injury, IPD would not release that car to ANYONE except ME!!

I wouldn't drive that car from Tennessee to California for all the tea in China. California law may be different from Indiana law, but you can bet your life that somewhere between those states there will be a state that is just like here.

I have had more than one friend who went through this, and ended up with a car that they could never register, or legally drive. (I.e. a parts car...)

My rule is: NEVER pay for a car until you are presented with a CLEAN title. One without anyone else's name on the purchaser line, and without any alterations or erasures.

What exactly does that mean? I have a pink title slip with California all over it, so would it still be registered under the original owner?

Tomorrow I hope that the lines are small, because I am going to drop by the DMV and see if I can get the thing registered here in my state. Going to fill out all the required forms and see what they tell me.

I know some people in Georgia, so I might just get the damned thing registered in Georgia. Then a year later get it registered in TN. Make this own damn process easier.

What about a applying for a lost title and statement of facts.??

I just went through two junkyard motorcycle rebuilds ( CR500 & XR600)

and a '96 Ranger.

Ask the DMV for the paperwork for a lost title and a statement of facts and a permit to move the vehicle to the Dmv for identification verification.

You will also need proof of insurance, unless you get a non-op registration for her.

Another option to avoid insureance is to call the local police or CHP and have them drive out to your residence and verify the Vin and Engine #'s.

If you have them come out you will need to have the paperwork in hand and filled out for them to sign. (They don't carry ant with them). There is no cost for the Police /Chp thing.

.....OK, since it is registered here in California, there should be no problems. I have used those permits before putting the car under my name before. So, sounds like it should be OK.

Thank you guys for all your help, and for you to ask questions for me at the DMV AndysPlit. Seems like everything will be a'ok. Was getting my nerves running for awhile not knowing what I was going to do. Now all that I have left is to get a loan for roughly $1,000 from my parents hopefully and California will be a green light for this January!

I have started to have dreams about this, and so can not wait to get my Z home. Will be driving her everywhere even on pointless trips around the town.

When I get her, might even go up to The Tail of The Dragon the fallowing weekend or something. Its been a while since I have been on that path and would love to give it a drive.

I think it is the windiest road in North America. Some 318 corners in 11 miles of road.

All kinds of cars from the daily minivan to the most exotic cars come to travel this road. Even professional racers from around the world have hit this road up from time to time.

The Cherohala Skyway is right there too and it is freaking awesome. I have been down that road before and it is just lovely.

Basically this junk is located on the south side of the Great Smokey Mountains mostly on the North Carolina side.

Today I was at the CA DMV. I just bought a 1990 300ZX. Kind of the same situation you have with your Z. One guy sold it to another guy who then sold it to me. There was no title, an application for lost title was provided by the first owner.

With a purchase price of $1,000 for sales tax purposes, back fees due on the lapsed registration, and transfer of title and registration to me, the total was $209.

I asked the lady about your situation. She said in order to give any kind of temporary permits, you have to pay the fee's they determine. As long as there are no outstanding issues, it should run under $130.

Thats not a bad price I guess. When I get the car back to TN, at least it will be much much easier for me to get the title here in TN. Don't really care the cost in $$ atm as long as I get my car. Even after the moneys that I give to the governments and transportation costs I still got a steal on the car.

When I get back to TN I am going to end up paying no more then $50 for everything to get my car legally on the road so it will all be good.

$130 out in Cali isn't all that bad for how bad this needs to get fixed. Does the Bill of Sale tax count here or not? Or do I basically just pay for the temp tag.

All that doesn't really matter though, because I at least know that I am 100% good to get a temp and able to get my car registered out here in TN.
