Weasel73240Z Posted November 6, 2007 Share #1 Posted November 6, 2007 I removed the flat tops from my 73, and installed a set of 3 screw round tops. I also removed all of the smog stuff. Behind the distributor, there's an outlet tube (about 1" diameter) that comes from the crackcase, and used to go to the smog pump via a braided line. Is it okay to block the outlet off? Can the outlet tube be removed and plugged, it would look alot better without it?Thanks.
sblake01 Posted November 6, 2007 Share #2 Posted November 6, 2007 Is that the crankcase breather tube you're referring to? If so, I wouldn't block it.
BRE-240Z Posted November 6, 2007 Share #3 Posted November 6, 2007 That sounds like the PCV tube to me. Do you have a photo?
sblake01 Posted November 6, 2007 Share #4 Posted November 6, 2007 PCV (positive crankcase ventillation), crankcase breather, same thing.
BRE-240Z Posted November 6, 2007 Share #5 Posted November 6, 2007 Paul, on the early 240Z this braided hose runs from the block to the PCV valve on the balance tube. See the braided hose in the dead center of the attached photo?
Weasel73240Z Posted November 6, 2007 Author Share #6 Posted November 6, 2007 It's definitely the crankcase breather (PCV) outlet. I wasn't sure if it went to the smog pump or the balancing tube. I thought it went to the smog pump, but I could be wrong. I marked just about everything when I took the engine apart, but I forgot to mark this one. I'll post a pic when I get home. sblake01 Posted November 6, 2007 Share #7 Posted November 6, 2007 Don't really need a picture. If you plug it, the vapors from the crankcase will have to be vented somewhere or you'll have problems.

Readily available from any parts house, Motorsport, Courtesy, whatever. It runs directly between the tube in the block that you described and the PCV valve on the balance tube. Weasel73240Z Posted November 6, 2007 Author Share #9 Posted November 6, 2007 Thanks everyone. I think the tube being different diameters at the two ends is what confused me. I'll look through my boxes of old parts, I'm sure the hose I need is in there somewhere.Paul
WingZr0 Posted November 6, 2007 Share #10 Posted November 6, 2007 Speaking of which the EGR Tube on my '77 cracked. Can I saw this thing in half at the crack and use a rubber hose with someclamps, and Gasket Sealent maybe, to connect the two halfs back together? sblake01 Posted November 6, 2007 Share #11 Posted November 6, 2007 Nope. Hot exhaust gasses run through there.
