Fuel Pump Replacement options?

Howdy all,

Pardon the newb question, I promise I did search.

I'm looking at trading a guy and getting a '78 280z 5 speed car. He says it needs a fuel pump to run. (whether his diagnosis is correct or not it a whole different issue...but it's a place to start).

My question is...what's the typical setup for a stock fuel pump replacement? Is there a low priced aftermarket one that works well? I know going through factory replacement parts channels will cost a ton, typically. And I figure these cars are at the point where folks have pretty much figured out all the "works great, costs less" type upgrades or replacments. For instance...the "mustang 5.0 syle" aftermarket fuel pumps are popular for lots of cars. I don't supose that's the case here...but maybe there's a cheap/good alternative that folks have hacked for the 280z.

So...I hope that makes sense. Any insight?

Thanks!

Clem

Well, while the true OEM type pump would indeed be preferred, they are a bit pricey. I ended up getting a Wallbro type replacement from my local parts store. It was an easy install, especially since it was replacing a similar aftermarket cheapo of unknown age.

My unit cost about $110 (tax included) and I had it the day after ordering. If you just want one to run for a while, one of these should do the trick.

Of course, as you have mentioned, this may not even be the problem with the car.

Just because it is not getting gas does not mean the the pump is bad. It could be a relay, a poor connection, a clogged filter (either in the tank or on the pump)...

Get some more information about the vehicle, and search for "rust" first on this site, and on that car.

Even though you are considering trading something with the owner, you should remember this little phrase:

Just because it is free does not mean it is cheap.

Attached is an old photo of the worn unit. It took about twenty minutes to replace, but I work slowly (especially when gasoline is involved).

10-four! Free cars are definitely some of the most expensive, in my experience ;).

I'm going to look at the car in question sometime soon. I've started researching here for where to look for rust. The owner says "It's got rust in the usual places" which to me means it's got plenty of rust.

I really just see this as either a fun car to beat around in or get running and resell.

Thanks,

Clem
