Price seems a little high for a used/non-rebuilt tranny (rebuilt would obviously be much more though).

Keep an eye on the classifieds (here, zcar.com, club sites, etc.). You'll find people flipping these for minimal $.

I bought an 82 rebuilt for $300 CDN back when that was $250 US. The one advertized has been kickin around a while - I was wondering why it was completely sprayed with grey stuff - looks like it is sprayed over dirt in some photos.

I only paid $75 for the one in my Z ten years ago and $120 for the one in my 810 this year. They're both 83 trannys, one from a Maxima and one from a ZX. Got them at the junkyard, did seals and bearings in one and seals, bearings, and synchros in the other. Both work fine. Keep looking as that's too much for a used one and I don't care for the indiscriminant spraying of paint or coating on the eBay trans. That stuff is everywhere including places it shouldn't be.

I agree that's rather high for a used 5 speed which may need to be rebuilt. I recently paid less than $75 for an 83 5 speed at a local Upullit yard. Hybridz has one listed in their for sale section for $100. http://classifieds.hybridz.org/showcat.php/cat/20

Another quick question, I am the 2nd owner of my z and I think it was once in an accident (I think seller lied to me when he said it wasn't), but doesn't show it too much other than it needs a little frame repair and the crappy paint job. I think it is mostly original, other than carbs (still have the flattops, just in a box) and some more minor things. Anyways someone said it was a shame to switch out the original trans because of originality. So the question is what do you think about the originality and mainly what would switching the trans do to what the car is worth? I know its my decision, I just wanted some other points of view. So what if my quick question turned out to be long.

The roundtops and 5 speed would be for better driveability. You could keep the stock items and reinstall them when you're ready to sell the car if you're still concerned about originality at that point.

I build these transmissions for buyers out there. Cost to do a good rebuild is dependent upon orginal condition. I replace bearings, baulk rings, and seals by default. To put it in perpective a used tranny sells for about $100-$150 in the pick-n-pulls (other yards charge much more), a rebuild kit with syncros goes for about $250 so there's $350 in initial cost. Assuming that no gears need to be replaced then only labor need be added. My rates are $65 an hour (wouldn't know about commerical shop rates). Breakdown, cleaning and reassembly involve about 4 hours. That's $260 plus $350 for a total of $610. Did you want the case aluminum oxide blasted, power washed, and painted? That's another 3 hours of labor ($195) for a grand total of $705.00. Additional gears add to that figure.

I'm building a 240SX 5 speed for my 240Z. The trans was $100 (very good deal), the L6 bellhousing machining was $150 (free bellhousing I had on hand), the rebuild kit retails for about $300, and then there's my free labor. That's $550 without a labor charge. I will be building another 240SX transmission for sale. Contact for details if interested.
