Can this truly be the infamous models' "Butt Dent" car? :tapemouth

Saw this ad in Houston's craigslist last week and knew right away it couldn't be the real no. 6 car, as that Z is well known and accounted for. I will admit though that the ad did pique my interest and was curious to see just what he really had.

Problem is, there was no contact info left in the ad. Myself and another individual have posted ad's requesting this information and as of yet, there has been no response.

My conclusion....SICK JOKE :mad:

Always worth looking in to. Carl should know about this one. For certain it is NOT HLS30-00006. Also, the add says "0006 off the assembly line". That statement doesn't have much meaning. First clue is that there aren't enough digits. Should be 5 instead of 4. However it could be HS30-00006 or S30-00006. One never knows. Look into it!

Exactly what I was thinking. I've done everything possible at this time to get some kind of contact info but with no luck. I notified craigslist and left a follow up post asking this person to contact me.

Any other ideas out there?

The guy must be crazy HLS30-00006 was a dark green when it came to the US.

Yeah, but is was soon repainted to Bob Sharp racing colours, and still is.

He never actually mentions a VIN. His quote is "0006 off the assembly line". Could just be an attempt at clever(!) marketing. Or he could just be clueless. If this car was of such historical value wouldn't it be priced higher? And without the other car?

You all know that VINs didn't exist until 1980 right?

We call them VINs as kind of a generic term, I guess. Some manufacturers called them car numbers or chassis numbers but there just wasn't an accepted standard until 1980. There wasn't much in the way of 'identification' in the number prior to 1980. I used to know what each part of the 17 digit vin meant but I know that the first three digits are the manufacturer identifier and the last 6 contain the sequential number and somewhere in the middle are the vehicle's equipment, drive train, etc.

Wrong - VIN's existed before 1980. They were simply "standardized" in 1980 and the new standards included more information, that both the government and consumer groups wanted to see related to each vehicle.

The "VIN" was required to be visible, from outside the car for all 1969 Model Year cars sold in the USA. (check the dash of any 69 Model Year car sold here in the USA).

In the case of our DATSUN 240-Z's the complete VIN is comprised of two parts.

Vehicle Identification Number = Car Model Information + Chassis Number

HLS30 XXxxx

H= 2.4L engine

L = Left Hand Drive

S30=Sport Coupe

XXxxxx = the chassis serial number for that model
