Carl, if H stands for 2.4L engine why does mine have an H and it's a 76 -280Z

Because I said; "In the case of our DATSUN 240-Z's ....."

I could have said; "In the case of the Datsun 280-Z's.." the "H" stands for the 2.8L engine.... but wasn't thinking along that line at the time...

Why Nissan used "R" for the 2.6L in the 260-Z, then reverted to the "H" for the 280-Z's.... we'll most likely never know ;-)

FWIW,

Carl B.

one vote for clueless.

Mystery solved and Craig was pretty much correct on this one!

Approximately one month after the ad appeared the owner finally contacted me and after another month of back and forth emails and phone calls, I was able to check this car out last night.

It is an "early" car, just not as early as the ad would lead one to believe. How someone could think #00780 is anywhere near #00006 is beyond me! That's right....#780. Scheeesh :stupid:

I took pics, but because it's in a garage that's filled wall to wall and floor to ceiling with junk, I couldn't get any pictures of the car in all its glory.. Here's a break down of what I found.

Overall the car is in pretty good shape. It's got most of the unique "early" parts but it is missing a few. Most notably the matching # block! While there is an engine in the car and two other complete engines that go with the car, none of the 3 are the original. None of them have an E31 head or the 2400 valve cover. The engine in the car does have the original carbs and manifold.

The interior is mostly complete. All the panels are there and while I couldn't do a thorough inspection of each, they didn't appear to be cracked or busted up. This includes the rear panel with "no inspection plates". They are faded very badly though. The door panels are in "good" condition. The chrome strips are not peeling and I saw no major rips/tears. Because of all the junk inside the car I didn't get to inspect the tranny/wheel well vinyl as well as I'd like to, but what I saw looked good.

The dash is toast and has 6-8 major cracks. Missing the original radio and the steering wheel is a "later" one with holes. The console appeared to be in good condition. Sorry, no throttle control!:( Fuse box cover/ash try is there but missing the handle on the tray door.

The seats are original but are all torn up. (At least the driver side was and the passenger side was too full of stuff to tell.) No seat belt hooks on either side of them and it didn't look as if there ever were any. Has the chrome coat hangers though.

All the emblems with the exception of the "Datsun" on the deck lid are there and look to be the original metal ones.

Now as far as rust goes, we all know there's gonna be some and no exceptions here. The bottom of both front fenders were shot and the dog legs had major bubbling going on. The rockers surprisingly looked pretty good but considering what was going on at each end, you'll get no promises from me. LOL The car was sitting on 4 flat tires so I couldn't get under there to see what was happening underneath it and inside the floor wells were too packed to check the floor pans from the top side. The battery compartment had rust but because there was a battery in it and I couldn't get to the underside via the wheel well, I can't say for sure just how bad it is or isn't. The hood looked to be original and I didn't see any rust at the lip.

The hatch glass has the vertical defroster lines. Taillights are in good/very good shape with some pitting on the chrome strip. Windshield was also in good/very good condition with no cracks.

So, that's pretty much it for now. We haven't talked price yet and probably won't, as without the matching block I personally am not interested in this car. If anyone else is, pm me and I'll get you some contact info.
