240z vs. 2.1 Honda Prelude?

Alright, I'm set to race this guy in a 2.1 5spd Honda Prelude. I'm just wondering what these things can do? I don't know him at all, so I can't judge on his driveing abilities. My car is running kind of crappy right now, but I have till Saturday to get it running nice. Right now I have horrible hookup problems. My car leaves rubber for 1/2 a block right now and finally gets hookup in 2nd and goes. Whats a good RPM to launch at for these engines? Let me know what you think and how I will do at this race. Also, I can drive a manual very well, and shift pretty quick, its just my launches that at crappy. I'd like to get some bigger tires, but doubt I'll have them by Saturday. Thanks!

it all depends: what year/model is the prelude? is your car stock? are you running flat tops? if he has a late generation SI he should be able to beat you (drivers being eaqual) any other incarnation of prelude and you should take him remember he is front drive. my brother has a 73 and I believe he launches 3000-4000. before the race drop in a bottle of octane booster, lower your rear tire pressure (for more traction), remove unnessesary items (spare tire, subs, any thing heavy), if just for one race remove air cleaner. thats all the advice I've got.....oh yeah and don't get caught, and please don't loose to a honda:devious:

need to know the year to make a good estimate, as much as I hate to say it, Honda is very good at getting hp out of their engines.

if you win let us know, can't stand the thought of a "fuel efficient", "front wheel drive", "economical" granny's car that was never intended to be raced beating a thoroughbred car such as a Z.

Well, I'd almost forgotten about this thread. I finally raced the sucker, and well, he handed me my arse on a platter. I was incorrect about the engine, it was a 91 2.0SI motor with aftermarket clutch and cold air intake, other then that, it was stock as far as engine/drivetrain components go. We ran 3 runs, and he beat brutally on 2 of the 3, and the second run he missed 3rd and pulled ahead of him, however he still caught up to me in the long run to finish about dead even that time. My car is running a stock 2.4L w/E88 head, 72 SU's, 3.90 LSD rear end. I talked to him afterwards and he claimed 13.9 on the track, and I didn't believe it until he showed me some slips and it looks like he's being honest. He dumps his clutch at 7,000rpms and doesn't get traction until mid 2nd gear, and he says thats the only way to get these 4 bangers off the line with descent 0-60's. Sad thing was, he was still pulling on me off the line, even with the tires spinning...Oh well...My new car whooped his arse a couple weeks ago though, its an 03 Tiberon w/nitrous.

13.9 is too fast for that car with simple bolt ons. It takes a lot of money to get a Prelude in the 13's without laughing gas. My 195hp 97 runs mid 15's consistently with the rare 14.9. That's with R-compound tires BTW.

3g preludes like the one you raced are 16-17sec 1/4 cars.

the 2.0si you raced came w/130-135 hp. i have a 91 2.1si -140hp.

your car must have been running pretty crappy. ;p

i seriously doubt that a z w/stock suspension will totally maul a stock prelude in the twisties... it's a prelude, not a civic. the prelude was honda's most potent handler (nsx aside). what it didn't have in straight line speed/power, it more than made up for in it's rock solid handling. preludes are very easy to drive at the limit. i'm sure a z will edge it out, but it won't be that easy.

did he really drop his clutch @ 7k? his car redlines @ 6750, i think the revlimiter is at 7.2k. i think the guy you raced fed you a load of bs. if you get your engine running the way it should, you should take him.
