bbcountach Posted November 21, 2007 Share #1 Posted November 21, 2007 I was driving my '78 280z home yesterday, and the turn signals stopped working. When i hit the signal switch or the hazard switch, nothing happens, no noise, dash lights, or exterior lights. I bought a turn signal flasher, but I can't find where the old one is (how embarrassing). Is this the problem, or could it be something else?Thanks,-Ben
zanthus Posted November 21, 2007 Share #2 Posted November 21, 2007 If your dash lights are also not working I'd check your fuse.
sblake01 Posted November 21, 2007 Share #3 Posted November 21, 2007 Not likely that it's a bad flasher. It's located above the steering column just above the brake pedal but the signal for both the turn signals and the hazzards feed through the hazzard switch. Check the connection and the hazzard switch itself. Also check the connection of the two large black connectors just ahead of the console on the passenger side of the tunnel. Pull them apart and clean both sides with contact cleaner (not WD40 or the like), put them back togehter and see if that solves it.EDIT: I missed the dash lights/interior lights part. Check the fuse as Zanthus suggested. I believe that would be the top right corner 15A.
bbcountach Posted November 21, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted November 21, 2007 I found the flasher and replaced it, and only the hazard lights come on. I checked the fuses and they're all good. could it be the turn signal switch?
sblake01 Posted November 21, 2007 Share #5 Posted November 21, 2007 When you said 'dash lights, or exterior lights' were you referring to the indicators for the turn signals and the turn signals themselves? If that's the case, go back to my original post without the edit. Also, the turn signals and hazzards each have their own flasher. The one for the hazzards is harder to find but if you look under the dash, directly above the hood release lever, you'll see it.
bbcountach Posted November 21, 2007 Author Share #6 Posted November 21, 2007 by dash lights, i meant the turn signal indicators, not the entire dash.I had replaced the hazard flasher, I didn't see the turn signal flasher. I swapped out the new flasher for the turn signal flasher, and it still is not working. I cleaned the two black connectors like you suggested.so, for those at home keeping score:hazard lights: goodturn signals: no good.
sblake01 Posted November 21, 2007 Share #7 Posted November 21, 2007 Try the third fuse down on the left side of the fuse box if you haven't already.
zanthus Posted November 21, 2007 Share #8 Posted November 21, 2007 well it seems that I'm having a little trouble as well. My parking lights wont work. I keep on blowing fuses and I'm not sure why. I've traced wires and I don't see anything grounding out. The weird part is they were working 3 weeks ago the last time I worked on it. Is there something that might potentialy go wrong? What would be the best way to clean the bulb sockets because they are a little corroded and thats about the only thing I can think of why I would be blowing fuses. Any other ideas? 280~Master Posted November 21, 2007 Share #9 Posted November 21, 2007 There are 2 flasher units under the dash. Did you check both of them? They are both on the left side. If your flashers are out then here is where they are. Start at the basics. Fuses, Flashers, Hazard Switch, Wiring, Turn signal switch ect. Take a look at the pic for placement. sblake01 Posted November 21, 2007 Share #10 Posted November 21, 2007 I mentioned that in my other post and I was going to attach a picture until he said:I had replaced the hazard flasher, I didn't see the turn signal flasher. I swapped out the new flasher for the turn signal flasher...which I didn't really get.

bbcountach Posted November 29, 2007 Author Share #12 Posted November 29, 2007 so, after a week of frustration, I took it in to be looked at. A wire had gone bad and broken, and I replaced it. They work fine now. Thanks to everyone for their input and help! I really appreciate it.-Ben
