Cut-off switch anyone?

Hey, I'm looking to install a cut-off switch in my '70 Z. There's already a hidden button with wiring running out through the firewall and ending at the battery (though it's not connected). I understand my fuel pump is mechanical, so I'll probably have to go with an ignition cut-off, right?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I find that it is very convenient when wiring in an ignition kill switch, to put it in series with the Tachometer leads.

This is for an impulse type tachometer which is what I believe the '70 uses.

The BW wire from the coil + goes to the tach. loops through a transformer and exits as a GW wire.

The GW wire goes back to the ignition resistor in the engine bay.

All you need to do is wire a toggle switch in series with either of those two wires.

Can be done in the cabin for maximum security, or in the engine bay for minimum security.

If the wire tap is visible in the engine bay a thief can simply bridge the wiring and the switch is by-passed:tapemouth

I installed two cutoff switches in my 1967 MGB. One is near the battery, which is behind the passenger seat. It is a heavy-duty lever-type switch that disconnects the whole car from the battery. I did this because a short once nearly burned up the car! Lucas wiring - only about four fuses for the whole car! The other switch is for the fuel pump. It is a simple toggle switch that is in well hidden. I put a fuse on it, since the fuel pump circuit has none.

For the battery cutoff switch, make sure you find one with the correct rating. Probably has to be near the 100 A level. You might consider such a switch on the firewall, passenger side, near the battery so that you can reach the toggle from inside the car (up under the dash). Be extra carefull to do a solid job hooking anything like this up so that no loose wires lead to a fire. Probably, the best thing would be to hook the switch to the negative battery terminal. The other switch terminal could then be hooked up to ground. You might even be able to find such a switch with a key.

I use a switch to cut off my fuel pump (console mounted) and a battery cut-off (similar to one on the race car) that is located on the firewall. I use that as my anti-theft devise. I take the red handled "key" and place it on my key chain when I park it in places that worry me.

Greetings all -

When the battery needed replacing on my '73, I installed a cutoff switch on the firewall, got a new battery cable made up and bought a battery with the the hot contact out from under the fender. Since the car has a single electrical pump (at the tank), I dropped a two-position toggle switch into the pump line such that in run mode power goes to the pump and in safe mode it lights up the seat belt reminder light (which also reminds me to switch to run mode). The switch is hidden and in reach of the driver. In 'Safe' mode, there is enough gas in the carbs to run maybe 90 sec - enough to get into traffic and stall out -- I prefer to pay towing to seeing the last of my beast.
