Mine have the tell-tale color discoloration from the plating process-and the added "blue" of chrome plating.

I haven't seen a rusted set, but I have seen a set with the small dots like the Heater control panel develops from having the copper under the chrome corrode from the lack of a nickle plate between the two. Stainless does not do that!

I have a set of those JDM covers too.

Mine came with the car.

The original owner bought the car in Japan where he was a seargent in the Army.

He got the covers in Japan when he bought the car.

I have been thinking about making a mold and making fiberglass copies.

They mount on the top of the headlight bucket, so you could actually mount the standard plexy headlight covers and mount the fiberglass rings on top.

I want to paint mine black, and don't have the heart to paint the original rings.

Especially since they are in souch good shape.

The Datsun Spirit covers did not come with hardware. My originals have hardware and mounting instructions. The used set on eBay for $400 is a good price. These pieces are very expensive.

By "hardware" do you mean the mounting hardware - or the mounting hardware and the trim rings? Are the repo trim rings, if they are included, chrome or polished stainless?

The perspex/metal trim of an OEM headlight cover sits on top of the headlight panel scoop. The MSA headlight cover butts against the inside edge of the scoop. So, therefore the MSA perspex would not fit with a OEM metal trim. Plus, the shape of the perspex of an OEM and a MSA one are different. The OEM headlight seems to be a bit more bulbus towards the front corner of the cover.

I am the chap who brought the OEM covers from the ebay link at the top of this thread. And with the exchange rate, it worked out as a good price.

Also, I will have to check, but I have already a pair of OEM covers, and in my memory I seem to remember both chrome and polished stainless metal trim. Both these came from a reliable source, and are OEM ones. I will get back on this point.

I never drive in the rain anyway so not worried about leaking, and I am thinking about screwing them on instead of using the clips. Any thoughts?

just re-read my reply to Enrique's post, and I think it came across wrong. Apologies for those who may have misunderstood.

The point I was trying to make was....that mine, while advertised as being from Japan and look very much like "OEM/JDM/NOS" covers, are copies of those covers. I would consider them the Japanese equivalent of what Will is trying to do. Simply being from Japan doesn't make them bonafide JDM, NOS or OEM. Hence my question about markings...

BTW, weren't they also an aftermarket dealer-installed option here in the US?

They do look nice, though...Hopefully Will will get his plans together for a group buy! No pressure though. Really.

Hit up your local auto parts store for chrome door edge trim-I think you will find it pretty close to what you are looking for-and for about $8 a side!

The OEM rings are as wide as the stainless window frame-actually wider than I would like. The OEM covers are tough to fit as well, I sat mine on a headlight bucket to check fit, and was not impressed. It may be worth it this time to actually start with a headlight bucket and not the OEM covers-no since reproducing a fitment issue-I have worked on this project before...
