White Face Gauge kit problem (series 1 speedo

So I order the 50-5220 White Face Gauge kit from MSA.

Today, I instal the kit on the temp/oil gauge, followed by the Amp/Fuel gauge, then I get to the Usual NON-working clock. I go to the local Value Village and buy 2) AA battery operated small clocks. I tear the smaller of the 2 down and build a battery operated clock into the Z's clock. Looks and works beautiful, battery sits back behind the fusebox area.

So I tear the Tach out, dissasemble it, paint the back of the face with chrome paint, go to put the Vinyl sticker on and find it's off a smidge. So I line up the mounting holes and tweek it just enought that 0 to 1000 RPM's is dead on. The rest is off a little but it ain't brain surgery and we're talking.5 to 1.5 MM, depending on where ya look.

ON TO THE PITA. (pain in the azz) I put the tach back in and move over to the Speedometer. Tear it out, tear it down, paint the back alcohol swab the face and get ready to instal the white face and Vhoola.... WRONG.

The 90MPH mark on my face matches the 85MPH mark on the white face. My Speedo starts at 20MPH, the white face starts at 10.

So the question is...... Does MSA have the Correct face for the 20 to 160 speedo. Dead center above the "HI BEAM" light is 90MPH.

ANyone deal with this problem yet. I've done all the other gauges and they look AWESOME!!!!!! I just need one more gauge to finish the Much Brighter gauges.

HELP.......

Dave.

Pics below are lit garage, garage lights off - parking lights on close ups etc.

All gauges are lit with those Wide angle white B9 LED's from Superbriteleds.com AND YES, I used the wifes red nail polish for the needle tips for that extra.....you know.

I'd like to hear more about your clock upgrade. I attempted the same thing several years ago but never finished the project. I wanted to use the original clock hands but that wasn't easy. I then tried to fabricate new hands from aluminum that matched the size and shape of the original hands but with the proper centers for mounting to the battery clock. I also struggled with mounting the whole mechanism without having to damage the original housing.

If you took any pictures at the time that would be great but I wouldn't want you to have to take it back out.

Problem is that there were three separate speedos for 240Zs, and they don't have faces for them all. The Series 1 cars (like yours) started at 20 MPH. Because the US automotive press criticized that highly (along with customer comments, I'm sure), Datsun went from "starting at 20 and centered at 90" to "starting at 0 and center at 80". for the non-Series 1 '71s. At a later point (can't remember if it was '72 or '73) they went to the "start at 10 and center at 85" unit.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that there may not be a proper white face for the earliest speedo like yours. Simplest answer would be to find a used speedo that matches the white face, and keep the original as a spare.

Get hold of a Cat named Jasmater on Ebay

or email him at jasmaster1@yahoo.com .

He's the guy I got my White Gauges from and he can custom fabricat the style your looking for.

Last I saw though he did have both the 10 and 20MPH versions.

He's a cool cat with great quality stuff who lives in Orgeon and shipping was

pretty swift for me here in Califonia :)

I had written him last year after some jerk outbit me for a set 3 seconds before the auction was up (I HATE THAT!!) We never completed any transaction and I lost his email address.

Anyways, Thank you for his updated email, I wrote him about an hour ago and hope to hear from him soon. My speedo is in peices in a box and would look so much better if it were complete and in the car, ya know.

Thanks again. You'd think MSA would have all 3 available, considering how many early models are still out here.

actually they do make the 60- to 60+ amp gauge sticker and it is sent with the white face gauge set I ordered along with the 45+/- set.

And the other thing is the oil pressure is 145 on mine and they only sent a 90 degree one. as pictured below. I guess I should have payed more attension to the picture and not "ASSUMED" they would have or send the correct set, AND THEY EVEN ASK WHAT YEAR MAKE AND MODEL WITH BUILD DATE, THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN their CLUE.

Dave,

After buying 2 "working clocks" on Ebay and found niether worked, I thought about doing the battery clock as well before changing out my guages with either the Speedhut reverse indiglo or the LED bulbs as you have done. I have done searches for "mini" quartz movement clocks and found them as small as 2- 3/4 inches which seems as if they will fit in the stock housing. I then figure I will have to run wires to the battery terminals and locate a battery box somewhere else for easier access to it. I think this option will give a much more accurate and dependable timepiece.

I am however confused in my search for one that I might be able to attach the stock hands to, I figure with a little altering.

Can you tip us on how you wnet about this conversion and what type and /or where we could pick up the mecahnism that worked for you?

Thanks!
