obxtrainman Posted December 14, 2007 Share #1 Posted December 14, 2007 I'm sure this has been beat to death. I've done many searches already. I had set my timing to 10BTDC, with the dwell around 36. The car was running pretty darn well. At this point, I've put in the new Ztherapy carbs. I now have a bit of a cough. I had reset the dwell to a little higher degrees. I can't really get to the higher end of the spectrum. I had to drop the point gap to .017 just to get to 37 degrees of dwell. My new reman dizzy has a number that doesn't list in the Haynes manual. I'm going to reset the timing to 7BTDC and then readjust the carbs one more time. Other than that, I don't know what to do. I guess I could just keep trying different timings, point gaps, and carb adjusments.:disappoinOBX
Arne Posted December 14, 2007 Share #2 Posted December 14, 2007 I guess I don't understand why you went to the timing for this? If the car was running fine prior to changing the carbs, and no other changes occurred at the same time, there is no reason to change the timing. You should be working with the carbs, as they are the parts that changed.Or is there more to the story that we haven't yet heard?

Just because ZTherapy's are refurbished doesn't mean they are plug and play...gotta check 'em out to be sure shipping didn't alter things too much.Steve
beandip Posted December 15, 2007 Share #4 Posted December 15, 2007 If you are using light weight oil in the dampeners this can cause a stumble coming off idle. I had this problem, and after much checking and trying this and that . I went with what Nissan recommends , 20 wt. and that solved the problem. I am not saying this is your problem , but you might think about what oil in the dampeners. ATF AND Mystery oil are both 5wt. They say that 10w 30 will work as a substitute for the 20 wt. I don't know, that haven't tried it. 20wt. can be found at a Motor Cycle shop, it's used in the front forks. Gary:rambo:
beandip Posted December 15, 2007 Share #5 Posted December 15, 2007 What ignition are you using? Points ? This makes a difference also. ZX dist. on my engine , the timing is set at 15* BTDC . My old Points dist. I set at 10*. With either one make sure the vacuum advance pot is working correctly and the vacuum line is not leaking. These things along with the wrong plugs all can cause a stumble. These things are easy to check , if all is good then adjust the floats in the carbs , but if they just came from ZTherapy the floats should be right on. Steve sets them at .500" at assembly. However mistakes can happen. Gary
obxtrainman Posted December 15, 2007 Author Share #6 Posted December 15, 2007 The reason I'm thinking timing is because my mechanic test drove it, and told me it was definitely secondary ignition problem. I did have a bit of stumble before I changed the carbs once in awhile. All the ignition parts are new, coil, wires,NGK plugs, voltage regulator, reman dizzy. I've put all new vacuum lines on.By the way, why does the damper oil level always drop below the top of the small tube down inside the dome. The cars sounds great at idle. The carbs sound right on. I don't know what lean or rich sounds like. I have never tuned carbs before. This is why I took it over to my friend. The Town of Nags Head motor pool mechanics supervisor. Quite frankly he was amazed at how well I had tuned them. I watched the video about 10 times, at least the actual tuning part. I'm using 20wt machine oil from hardware store in the dampers by the way.
