I bid on a set of chrome headers on ebay. They are off a 1978 280z i think. they have round exhaust holes and the pipes are 2" diameter. Well these things fit my 1972 240z? i sure hope so!!! oh yeah and there is a place in Salina Kansas called Industrial Refinishings, they will triple chrom about anything for a very reasonable price.

Ditto...just go look at your head. You could have practically any head made for the L-series engine. Swaps are pretty common. Look right above the front spark plug. Although it's not IDEAL, reound port headers will work on swuare port heads and I have heard vica-versa will work too...

E88, E31, N42 = square port

N47, P79= round port

I think P90 is square too, but kinda foggy on that one....

Good luck!

Not only that, but chrome is not the ideal coating for a header any more than paint is. They will turn blue, pit and sooner or later they will rust just like a painted one. Only good coating for a header is Jet Hot or a similar coating. :cross-eye They are the only coating that will stand up to the heat for any lenght of time.

I could not find any used headers when i bought mine... I ended up buying the Motorsport 6-2-1 headers and 2.5" exhaust system to go with it. The headers were a bit expensive, about $340.00 or so with shipping, but its one of the best headers I have seen as far as solid is concerned. It fit very well also (except for the collector which didn't). It sounds very good and probably helped the performance some but I am not sure how much since I made several changes at the same time.

  • 4 weeks later...

I have a header question I thought I'd tag on here. Below is a pic of my ports with the manifold and header removed. It's a P79 head. I guess I should be using a header with round ports but from the shape of the black stuff around the exhaust ports it looks like the header that was on there was actually sort of square. Is this what you call square ports? I wouldn't call these exactly square but maybe that's the terminology? If these marks aren't "square" then what is this header really for? I'd like to know so I can sell the header. Thanks for the help!!!

Looks like a round port head with a square port header to me. :stupid:

The square ports are not perfectly square, more rectangular than square actually. I think the P-79 and the N-47 were two of the heads with round ports on both exhaust and intake, the rest were round intake, square exhaust. Not sure about the P-90 as I have never had one of them. :ermm:
