Posted January 1, 200817 yr comment_232732 I just removed the crank pulley using a puller. I found the pulley chiped and both with what I will call spall. It seems to be eroded away from the pulley and deposited on the crankshaft. I have photos of both parts. I am not only unsure as to what it is but also what do to do next. The spalling on the crank is raised and hard, note the scrap marks on the pulley. It almost looks like a flash weld deposit. January 1, 200817 yr comment_232736 Hi, The crank will not be a problem. Dress it with a fine file to take off the high points and finish with emery paper. The pulley should be replaced. From the photos it looks as if it has cracks. Have a great new year. David. January 1, 200817 yr comment_232739 Usually this happens in conjunction with the woodruff key in the crank breaking out of the groove. It's also pretty commonly accompanied by a loose front crank bolt as well as a spun harmonic balancer. It's one of those chicken and the egg things, does the balancer go bad and cause the crank bolt to loosen, or does the crank bolt loosen and cause the balancer to go bad. I see the woodruff key in one of the pictures, but is the keyway OK? If not, you may want to replace the crank. If the keyway isn't busted out I'd take the advice above and file the crank and install a new balancer. Don't forget to loctite the bolt. January 2, 200817 yr Author comment_232746 The crank bolt was tight. The pulley was separated from the rubber and I will replace with a new one. (yes, I heard the pulley crack while pulling it off) I'll check the keyway but the key is in tight. The pitting around the keyway is all from the pulley and there is a deposit of metal on the crank. (What caused this? It almost looks like a cold weld?) I'll follow your suggetion and clean the crank, it is in the car so it is a bit tough to see and do. Thank you for your suggestions and Happy New Year, 2008!Kay Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/26636-spalled-crankshaft/#findComment-232746 Share on other sites
