Well, I wish I had seen this thread before I made last nights ebay purchase - a brake vacuum hose. I pulled the part number from the club parts CD (47471-E4601) and plugged it into nissanparts.org and came up with an internet price of 38.95 before shipping. I figured anything below $30 would be a good deal.

I think that's a perfect example of the problem here. The auction you won clearly states NOS yet I'm fairly certain that the hose in question should have a braided cover which is not what the picture shows. I don't think you got a bad deal for even an aftermarket molded hose like that but it still seems a little deceptive to me. Perhaps it's he difference between what the seller describes as "*New* NOS" and plain old NOS.

Watch out for the old OEM trick too - the whole parts industry uses it verrrrry loosely. I read "original equipment manufacturer", but other see something else, which can leave you with something similar to the desired part but COMPLETELY unsuitable. I was recently a victim (another vendor)

Buyer beware - we have a latin specialist that says it much nicer - same message though.

This guy has engines up all the time. A bit pricey imo, though I have yet to rebuilt my own L engine.

But I wonder why he puts them on ebay. I have be looking on ebay for Datsun parts for over a year now, and every time I run across one, I have never seen one sold.

What he does is cool, though I just found out about him not being very trustworthy in this thread. Its a shame, because what he does is pretty cool imo. Too bad for our community we can't trust him when he has nice looking rebuilt engines up on ebay all the time and is the only one doing so.

Here I have been badmouthing Ebay this evening, and then I remember that my neighbor is probably going to be listing a L28 engine, and a R200 Differential from a 83 280ZX soon... poetic justice I suppose.

I know the engine works, because he drove the car to the shop yesterday to pull the transmission out of it so he could sell it to me.:devious:

He originally was going to restore the car and drop a V8 into it, but once it was on the lift it was obvious that the rust monster had won. Around here it usually does.

I also noticed the lack of a braided cover on the ebay part, and it did not dissuade me from bidding. The hose currently on my car that comes off the brake master cylinder, although somewhat frayed, is a (most likely original) braided hose. However, the brake vacuum hose on my car which comes off the manifold is a genuine Nissan part (still has the part sticker attached to it) and it is rubber only - no braided cover. And when I did the search on nissanparts.org it showed the original part number for the ebay part has superceded to a new number, #47471-E4603.

I can't say for sure, but I believe it quite possible that the newer part number may indeed be the rubber hose with no braided cover as sold by "datsun-parts". When I receive the ebay part, I'll post what I find...genuine Nissan or other.

I suspect you are correct and I have to be careful with my wording. Let's get one thing straight: Nissan themselves didn't make any of these parts. Suppliers to Nissan made them and sometimes put the Nissan name on the part and sometimes put their own name on the part, e.g., Hitachi Radio or SU carbs. That same supplier may well offer parts direct which may be identical to the parts that come through Nissan with only different markings. I have no doubt that many parts have been superseded by other parts that may even be of higher quality than the original. Once again I don't think you have been cheated in any way. My master vac hose is not braided either and doesn't have any markings that I can see so yours may well be of higher quality.

My complaint is really just using the description NOS. To me that literally means OLD stock and as such may have been sitting on a shelf for 30 years. In my mind using that term in an auction implies that it is an original part that's been sitting around - not something manufactured recently.
