Weasel73240Z Posted May 2, 2008 Share #37 Posted May 2, 2008 Checked, and got spark, at all 6 cylinders. How good the spark is I don't know, I don't have anything to compare it to, but the spark at the coil is much brighter and hotter since I changed to the Beck Arnley coil. And I get a pretty good white spark at all of the plugs. I'll reset everything to TDC, and post pics of the dizzy. But I triple checked today that I was at TDC on the comp. stroke, and the dizzy was pointing right at the #1. I'm almost 100% this is not timing or spark, I think its air/fuel. I think I'll adjust the float bowl level up tomorrow, and see what that does. Thanks for all the ideas, I don't know what I'd do without this site, . Weasel73240Z Posted May 2, 2008 Share #38 Posted May 2, 2008 I think I found the problem..looks like I'm a tooth off on the drive gear. I'd love some input before I drop the oil pump, this is my first time with the Z, but that looks off doesn't it? Thanks for all the help. The other pic is the crank pulley, right at TDC. Weasel73240Z Posted May 2, 2008 Share #40 Posted May 2, 2008 Thanks alot Stephen. You were actually the guy I was hoping to hear from. I'm gonna pull the oil pump right now, I'll post another pic of it after I re-adjust and before I re-install the dizzy.
Weasel73240Z Posted May 2, 2008 Share #41 Posted May 2, 2008 Does this look better before I bolt it up?
lbpd719 Posted May 2, 2008 Share #42 Posted May 2, 2008 looks to me like you are still a tiny bit off - but close enough for running =)
Weasel73240Z Posted May 2, 2008 Share #43 Posted May 2, 2008 Now its a little better, but not quite right. If I retard the dizzy as much as I can it'll run, but not like it should. I think, since I have to retard the dizzy all the way, maybe I went 1 tooth too far.Are you thinking I went too far the other way also?
xray Posted May 3, 2008 Share #44 Posted May 3, 2008 http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28449&highlight=distributor+gear...problem seems eerily familiar....Your second pic is one tooth too far the opposite way. It should line up right edge of the screw hole.

sblake01 Posted May 3, 2008 Share #46 Posted May 3, 2008 er..Steve, I think that was meant for me as it came after post #39 but the thread you linked to is the one I was trying to find when I made that post so....Thank you.
xray Posted May 3, 2008 Share #47 Posted May 3, 2008 er..Steve, I think that was meant for me as it came after post #39 but the thread you linked to is the one I was trying to find when I made that post so....Thank you. That's sarcasm-smilie there. I know it was for you. I find it interesting that the focus shifted suddenly from "I'm sure it's fuel-related" to not just ignition timing but an offset drive gear, yet no info was posted that would've indicated the timing cover, oil pump etc were removed or otherwise altered. The link above referenced the exact issue I had with my car, and had he mentioned the drive gear situation earlier, (or searched I suppose) better more accurate advice could have been given. Glad I could help
Weasel73240Z Posted May 3, 2008 Share #48 Posted May 3, 2008 I meant no disrespect to anyone, just seems that sblake has been working on L series since before I was born. I may not know him, but after snooping around this board for 6 months, I value his opinion.xray, sorry if I violated some rule by not giving you complete enough info. As I tried to make clear, this is my first go-round with the z (as a matter of fact, its my first time with an overhead cam engine - always been an American muscle guy), I don't necessarily know what info is needed.:stupid:And, i did read that whole thread about the trouble you were having, which is what lead me to question again whether my timing was right in the first place. I may have jumped around drawing conclusions, buts its only because I want so badly to finally drive this car, after just looking at it in my garage for 6 months.
