Matches Posted May 25, 2008 Author Share #61 Posted May 25, 2008 No spare coil. I have installed some kind of aftermarket coil. I was told that it is oil filled and should not be installed horizontally the way the factory coil was. But I was also told that sometimes they go bad and sometimes they don't when installed that way. So it could be the coil is just not producing enough spark. I will order a new one and try that. Matches Posted June 21, 2008 Author Share #62 Posted June 21, 2008 Finally after so many months of occasional work and constant head scratching, the problem turns out to be one wire. I bypassed the ballast resistor and she fired right up. Wow I feel dumb. A bit of research led to me discovering that there are two different coils. The 1.5 ohm needs the resistor, the 3 ohm does not. Why the old set up worked fine I may never know. Probably that the old coil did go bad, and that my new one is 3 ohm. Now if I can only get the water pump to seal.....
xray Posted June 21, 2008 Share #63 Posted June 21, 2008 Well that's a HUGE relief! Congrats on getting it done and running....except for the coolant leak (ugh.) May take a couple of tries with the gaskets, and you need to have both surfaces COMPLETELY smooth and clean. I hope that's the last big hurdle you have to manage
Matches Posted June 23, 2008 Author Share #64 Posted June 23, 2008 Thanks! Yeah I am excited. This whole time I have been driving around in a 1988 Volvo 4 door. Automatic, all the grandma equipment. I am just about ready to shoot myself. Thank goodness for my motorcycle! Also I wanted to thank you Xray for all the very valuable information you offered earlier in this thread. I did everything you suggested and I don't think the engine would be running as well as it does now without your help! So thank you very much! biddljj Posted October 24, 2008 Share #65 Posted October 24, 2008 I am also trying to get my 1972 240Z running. I believe I have the wires right for timing order.... Good spark at the points.... Car tries to start but won't keep running. Fuel is getting to carbs.... I wanted to check the carb bowls but I don't know how to get them off.... I have round top SU's that have a hunk of the casting that preventseasy removal of the top of the float bowl.zdisease
