I have a question about horsepower.

Cebu, are you looking to upgrade the motor in a car you're planning on selling, or do you have a different car that you're trying to upgrade?

Next, based upon some of your other inquiries on this website, several questions come to mind.

1. Why do you want a more powerful motor?

2. Did you do any research on this site, ZCar.com, or Hybridz before you started posting questions? Did you really look at Hybridz after it was suggested to you 7 months ago?

3. What is the condition of the car you want to upgrade the motor for?

4. Is the body in any shape for increased power?

5. Is the rest of the powertrain ready for an upgrade?

6. Do you have the mechanical aptitude and workshop to do your own work?

7. Have you given serious thought to the cost of doing things right/safely?

There are plenty of people on this site and other Z car sites who are willing to help people who are ready for a serious effort. I don't think you're ready for a serious effort, but I would be happy if you proved me wrong.

Steve

First, typing in all capital letters usually represents yelling. I am calm, and I'm not typing in all capital letters.

I am trying to help you. Just feeding you an answer does not help you in the long run. Looking at your other posts (which I did before my first post in this thread) leaves me with the impression that you are a novice when it comes to Z cars if not cars in general. I posed other questions to find out your true intent and to try to get you to think about the whole process.

You could shove a V8 into a Z. What transmission do you want to mate to that motor? What parts do you think you'll break after your transplant?

I've owned a Z car for almost 15 years. I've learned a lot by trial and error (emphasis on error). I've also learned a lot by reading (books and websites) and asking thoughtful questions.

The help you need may not be the help you ask for.

Literature is your friend. I would invest in one or more of these books if I were you.

They are a bit expensive, but well worth the money.

Also buy a Haynes manual for you car if you havent already.

I bought my first z car at 17. Now at 19, I feel very confident working on z cars (but I have done a LOT of work on my and other Z's LOL). I had previous car experience before then, but Z cars are a different story. Trial and error is a big part of my learning experience, as is the majority of car geeks. Start small, then work your way to the bigger mods. You cant just jump in with an engine swap etc....

People expect you to try and educate yourself first. The problem with your question is that it's so vague that there are a million different ways to go, and nobody wants to write a novel to try and answer your question thoroughly. You have to take some responsibility and do some reading and researching for yourself. That's a nice way of saying what I'm sure a lot of us are thinking, which is that we can't (and don't want to) wipe your arse for you through the computer. ROFL

Get the How to Modify Your Nissan/Datsun OHC Engine book (you can find it through the link that Justin gave in the previous post) if you insist on making your power with a normally aspirated L6. You'll spend a hell of a lot of money building an engine that requires race gas and has a lifespan measured in hours to get 300 hp. If you want something more modest, you can do a cam and triple carbs and all that. Regardless of what you do, people are still going to expect you to do some research on those topics so that when you ask a question it is specific so that we can then give a short answer.

cebu, I want to welcome you to the web site. Sorry for the rough start. I think your first post came across with some unrealistic expectations for what performance you can get from a 30+ year old engine. As was pointed out it is possible to do but not practical. At least for a car driven on the street. These cars cannot tolerate that sort of HP , unless you do some work to strengthen the body , since there is no frame. Any and all of this is vary expensive , including the engine work. Especially if you have to have any of it done. For your present set up. If you have flat top carbs , replace them with round top SUs. This will increase performance and drive ability. Find a '79-'80 280ZX Dist and this will improve the performance as well. If this car is a manual trans Z , you have a rear end gear ratio 336 to 1, find a z with a automatic they have a 354 to 1 ratio. The lower gears will give you more off the line and not so low that it is uncomfortable on the freeway. From there the cost curve goes up at a steep rate. I hope this is of help and food for thought. (not sure if this is the right forum)

With my 260z what is the best way to get 300 HP out of it?

A better question would be:

"I have X amount of dollars, what should I spend it on to get the maximum bang for buck?"

What is your definition of low budget? $500, $2000, $3000?

You will get a lot more appropriate replies if you specify a ball park figure of how much you have to spend.

ok LOL well i dont have the $$$ for another engine but i could put in a cam get it bord out(dont know how to spell that) get su carbs and...... what els could i do? *forget the low buget thing*

An engine swap (L28) IS the low budget alternative.

I want to add to the earlier posts that you need to step back first, take a deep breathe and figure out how much money you have before asking another question.

When you know the answer to that then everything else can and will fall into place.

Unlike you and a few others posting here I didn't get my first Z (a 260) until I was 24 but then again that was in 1974 and I bought it new at Bob Sharp's. Now I own a 240 and it has a NA 3.2L L28 series engine (w/triples) making just over 320hp@crank on pump gas. More money in some ways than a turbo but a true joy to push to the limit.
