i'm comtemplating putting my 76 z together without the a/c equipment as i will not use it. if i can find a heater control dash box without the a/c option, is it fairly straightforward to replace my original a/c heater control unit with the non a/c unit? any input appreciated as i'm not sure what i'm getting into.

I answered your pm but I'll also answer the question here. No. The systems are different between the AC and the non AC cars. Different heater valves, different manner in which the vents are controlled (cables/levers vs. vacuum), etc. Without getting into all the details, even if the AC components have been removed, you'll have to keep the controls as they are to properly control your heater/defroster etc. No real reason to switch the control panel you just won't have AC. And the non AC faceplate doesn't work on the AC panel.

I have a non air conditioned 75 280z that I would like to install air conditioning. Maybe we could trade some parts.

I think you've missed the point. Unless you posses the skills to do the complete conversion, instaling factory ac on an non ac 280Z would be very tedious. I'm and HVAC tech and I doubt if I would do it. Aftermarket would be much easier to install in a non ac 280Z.

Motorsport sells a good one. It fits nicely, isn't too hard to install, and cools well. Now, like I said, I'm a HVAC/MVAC tech so what I say is easy might be harder for someone who isn't. It's about 1200 bucks though. Vintage Air would probably be better though I've never installed one in a Z. I've done a few installs of Vintage Air systems in muscle cars and they are very cold rivaling anything you'd find in a new vehicle.
