Posted February 7, 200817 yr comment_236733 Can you use an ECU from a 1980 280zx in a 1978 280z? I think my ECU is the base of a problem we're having with my car but I really don't want to have to buy a new one to find that mine is ok. So, we also have a 280zx that runs great and I was hoping we could plug that one in to see if it fixes the problem. Then I'd buy a new one. If not is there a way of testing an ECU to see if it is bad? We have access to all the tools a mechanic could ever ask for so if theres a tool or a way to test them or if they are interchangeable in those years please help me out! Just trying to eliminate things so anything is helpful thanks Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/27009-stupid-question-i-know/ Share on other sites
February 7, 200817 yr comment_236734 I'll type the warning that's on the side of a 79 ECU I have.WARNING: This ECU should, under no circumstances, be installed on 1978 or earlier year models. Otherwise damage to the ECU might result. In checking this ECU with EFI Analyzer, be sure to use proper adapter harness. Now, I don't know what the 'proper adapter harness' would be, probably something you'd have found in a Datsun or Nissan dealership years ago. Now there is a check that you can do outlined in the FSM where you check the 35 pin connector . But I don't know of an actual test for the ECU itself. February 7, 200817 yr Author comment_236735 haha another stupid question...what does FSM stand for I've seen it a lot on here but am not familiar with the meaning. Thanks a bunch I won't try the other ECU no need to fry it. February 7, 200817 yr comment_236737 FSM: Factory Service Manual. A while back I cut the ECU connector out of a junkyard car with about 8-10" of the wires on it with the intention intention of someday making a ECU test board with it. As soon as I figure out, or find posted somewhere, what the test parameters should be. February 8, 200817 yr comment_236753 I haven't driven mine since 1pm today. But, seriously, if anyone needs a 78 FSM, I can send it to you. I have it set up in four sepsrate emails, ranging from about 1.3mb to 1.8 mb ea, and all you have to do is download the sections into a folder. That is if your isp allows emails that size.
