(blinking quickly as I open the door and peek out at the big ball of fire in the sky)... THERE IS LIGHT!!!! After a fun few days....

The new server is online and we are on the air.

If you've been trying to get to the website over the past few days, I'm sorry for the delay. Moving servers almost ALWAYS takes double the time you budget. :bunny:

looks like a great job, Mike.

pages seem to load a hell of a lot faster and the searches FLY. really noticeable on gallery downloads, pics just POP up.

Yes, it's much faster even at my office. I'm glad we made the switch.

not sure if you made the move from a modem yet, since the initial load of the site seems to be only slightly faster. but after that, it's noticeable. amazing what a couple of generations processor upgrade, etc will do.

Not sure what you mean by modem, but, we've been on the broadband side for a number of years. However, this time I made a switch from our old DSL provider to the business-grade cable-modem. Not only was this a switch to a new server, I also changed ISP's and we have a new dedicated IP for the server.

what is still needed?

i can be convinced to add to my end-of-year donation with a beginning-of-year bonus. not much arm-twisting necessary.

Thanks for all the time and work spent.

Battery Backup: I'd like to get a dedicated UPS to back up the server for longer than 2 minutes. A rackmount SmartUPS is a good solution for this. Right now our existing UPS is underpowered and the server cannot remain online long enough during a black-out. Only problem is the UPS itself is about $1,000. I'm saving the pennies from the monthly donations and advertising spots.

Hi Steve, the downtime shouldn't be more than 24 hours. I've found an extremely nice way to migrate the website with minimal downtime. Using a server management tool, I can migrate the entire site in just a few hours. The biggest time delay will depend on the change of our domain name from one server IP to the next. DNS changes usually take 24-hours, but, I've seen them work a lot faster.

LOL, I was wondering if someone was going to notice that. HAHA.

As our glorious US president put it: It all depends on the interpretation of what "is" is.... :bunny:

If you take out all of the time it took me to reinstall the server 4 times, determine a best method to transfer our 30GB of files/database, discover that PHP wasn't compiled with MySQL support (requiring a re-install), database migration errors, and all of the other crap that goes along with it... the *ACTUAL* migration of the data from one server to another only took about 2 hours. The OTHER crap just got in the way. LOL:alien::stupid:
