Posted February 14, 200817 yr comment_237088 Is this possible? I've had my old 71 up to 120 and she was near flight - the 77 at around 121 when I ran out of room and guts. 155 sounds pretttty tall. February 14, 200817 yr comment_237103 Possible? Sure - it takes about 350 HP to push the 240-Z up to 150mph... Easy with a strong V8... not likely with an N/A in-line 6 although not impossible... Didn't TonyD get close to that.. and it's been done on the salt flats...FWIW,Carl Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/27047-the-speedometer-has-160-we-have-took-it-to-155mph/#findComment-237103 Share on other sites
February 14, 200817 yr comment_237106 Factory speedo's are ALWAYS overly optimistic. The engineers are just seeing how high they can count. If you read any of the early reviews of the car, the stated top speed is about 125mph. February 14, 200817 yr comment_237107 Is this a statement made by a seller or someone just bragging about their car? I wouldn't think that statement is out of the realm of possibility, depending on who said it, and about what car. Engine build specs and drivetrain gearing details are a must, to answer a question like this. Ultimately it is the guy with the big smile on his face about to attempt it that would know if it is possible. Didn't they anticipate the S30 race cars of that time doing those speeds, no? February 14, 200817 yr comment_237121 Oh OK, a better question would be...at what speed will those D hubcaps fall off? Pretty car. I'm partial to that color this week. February 14, 200817 yr comment_237122 The color appeals to me, too. The seller might not be the most knowledgeable, but the car does look pretty decent. I'd want to see a lot more detailed photographs before I started getting interested, though. February 14, 200817 yr comment_237144 Info: 1971 240Z with a .85 5th gear, 4.44 lsd (equals 3.77 overall gearing in 5th), calibrated speedometer (an adapter built by a speedometer speciality shop), balanced engine, DeLong camshaft installed by FAR Performance, additional distributor and carbeurator work by FAR Performance, 6 to 1 headers w/2" exhaust. Lowered with BRE springs, front BRE spook and a long straightaway equaled 141mph. (summer of 1973) Did it once and never attempted it again - fun experience, but.............. February 14, 200817 yr comment_237148 Didn't they anticipate the S30 race cars of that time doing those speeds, no?I've an S30, L-model (rally car, 5-speed, R180 pumpkin) and there is no way it will top 130mph, let alone 155mph ...It was so light at 105 mph the steering wheel could be jiggled side-to-side with no effect on the direction of the car ... scary ... they just want to get lighter the more air the jams underneath at those speeds.
