Insurance for collector Z car?

While the topic has been covered in the past - it would be good to alert new members that may have missed those discussions - as to just how important it is to have your Classic Z Car insured by a speciality insurance company, on an Agreed Value policy.

So if we are sending them to the archives to search for Collector Car Insurance - we should also send them to the archives to find the threads that people involved in accidents with their Z's - who didn't have Collector Car Insurance, have gone though in the aftermath. It is never pretty... when a claims adjustor tells a Classic Z Car owner that his/her Datsun is worth $1,200.00, when they have over $8K or over $25K in the car...

If your Z isn't a daily driver - it is very important to have it properly insured on a Collector Car Insurance policy - but you also have to have a clean driving record etc.

By the way - I use Hagerty also. They know Classic Z Cars... and appreciate them for the Classic's that they are. You can get an on-line quote at: http://www.hagerty.com

Hello ALL,

All my cars have been insured through the Southern CA Auto Club - AAA, including my 1974 260Z. This year, they offered me their new product - Collector Car Insurance. They inspected my car, appraised it, and covered it for $8000.00. The annual premium is under $200.00!!

I also use Hagerty. I opted for the towing also. They guarantee a flat bed and I have 100 miles covered at no extra cost from brake down or accident to where ever I want the car taken. This coverage extends to all other cars I own with no additional charge. Agreed value is $12,000 and my costs are under $200. a year total. I have not heard one complaint from any one that is covered with them. Unlike other companies Hagerty only insurers these type of cars. If you have more than one in a collection the additional cars premiums are a fraction of the first one. Yet another advantage. I have just the one , but my friend that has more told me this. Gary

But be sure to know the limitations on Hagerty and other insurance companies.

While some require an attached garage to your home, others simply require limited access. Some will allow storage at a friend's garage or U-Store-It place and others will specifically disallow it. Some will require an appraisal for value and others will accept your stated value. Some have no mileage or use limitations, others have those and Collector Vehicle plate limitations.

Most will also require that you have regular insurance coverage on your other vehicles before they'll grant you a separate policy on your collector car.

Don't just "listen" to what the salesperson says, READ the policy and it's inclusions and exclusions. There are too many cases of "Selective Listening" and "I thought I understood what they meant, although that's not what they said." that afterwards will bite your behind.

I had the same concerns about insurance on my 72 when I purchased it a few years back after years of missing the fun of having a Z that actually ran. I parked my original 72 on the side of my house in 84 when I started a family it sat there neglected for for all those years because the family comes first. When kids were finally out of college and all the bills paid I finally could turn my $ and efforts towards the car. By that time is was to late and the car was only good as a parts car. I was lucky enough to find the exact year/color that was in good shape that the PO had been restoring and I was able to finish it and it looks and drives great. I insured it with Allstate since my other cars were. Didn't think much about it until I asked him if some jerk ran into me and totaled it how much would it be worth. $1,000 he told me, we all know that's crazy. I looked at Hagarty's but they have to many stipulations, like can't be driven to work, must be in a locked garage, milage issues. Their price mey be good but alot of folks can't meet their criteria.

I met a Z guy at the 2007 Daytona Convention named Jim Fredericks from the Tampa area (you would't believe the first gen Z Collection he has, Jay Leno would be envious). since he's an insurance agent he said he was able to secure policies for Z's on an agreed value with Progressive. Both my 72 and 82 are now covered with what I feel is a fair value.

It's great to be back in the Z world after all these years and not have to worry about some un-lincenced illegal alien totaling my car.
