Wiper operation question

I'm working on a very neglected '72 240z. I took the wipers and motor out recently and found them completely frozen. I disassembled the motor/gear box and cleaned and lubed the shaft so it now turns freely. I reassembled the unit and wanted to bench test it. After some research, I'm applying power on the LR (Power source) terminal of the 5 pin connector and grounding the B (Ground terminal). I then connect the LW (To relay) terminal to the L (Low) terminal and then ground both of them. The motor turns as expected, however, when I remove the connection such that the LW and L terminals aren't grounded, the motor turns backwards from the low and high speed direction. This implies that when you turn off the wipers, they immediately reverse direction until they hit the park position. Seems kind of weird to me. Can anyone confirm what happens when they turn off the wipers on their '72 Z? Do they keep moving normally until the complete swipe is finished, or do they immediately reverse until the park position is reached?

Your wiper motor is working correctly. The relay attached to the motor housing swaps the polarity and reverses it to the Park position.

Two things to make sure you do NOT forget:

1) Disassemble, clean and lube the Wiper Pivots. The ones that mount to the firewall and exit via the cowl openings. These are known to be one of the major problems in the Slow/Slower wiper design.

2) When you reassemble and are ready to test, do NOT mount the Wiper Arms and Blades and THEN test. The linkage to the motor can be, and often is, mounted 180° off. This results in the FIRST movement of the arms once the motor is powered, whether it be to the Park position of the first Wipe position to be directly downward and across your Cowl and Hood. You will NOT be happy with the scratch marks.

The trick is to apply a bit of masking or electrical tape and make a "flag" on the pivots BEFORE you mount the cowl metal back on. Turn on the wipers then, and observe the "flag", if it FIRST rotates downward, the linkage from the arms to the motor has been mounted 180° off. Correct this by removing the linkage, swiveling (actuating) it the 180° it needs, and then re-connect. It's just a simple hex nut with washers (lock/plain).

Thanks guys. I tore the whole thing apart and couldn't see how it could work any other way than to reverse when it parked. Just wanted to make sure. The actual wiper pivots are still totally frozen. I'll have to work on them next.
