In an article by Turbo Magazine they said that Tod Kaneko's 1972 Datsun 240 Z is a L28. I thought his car was all stock except for the turbo, interior, rims, etc. Am I wrong or is the magazine wrong?? The article is at http://www.turbomagazine.com/features/tur0801a01_free/index.html. Could someone correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks.

I have that issue and re-skimmed it. Pretty much the same as the website article. The car is a 240Z but swapped for the L28 then bored and stroked it to 3098cc. I guess it's just understood that the L24 was replaced by a L28 by stating it is one. Hope that helps.

But the thing that doesn't make sense is that the article talks about smog exemptions. If it has a 280z zx engine, it wouldn't qualify for smog exempt. Another question is, is it a L28 block with the 240 head?? Thats what it looks like.

I'm pretty sure all the smog exempt stuff relys on the actual age of the shell, not the engine. You can put anything (within reason, and power to weight restrictions) in a car that has it's model run beginning before the smog exemptions.

Thats my understanding anyway.
