Hi, folks. This is my first post to the forum and I think I've searched the site adequately beforehand so here goes.

Has any had experience in shipping a Z cross country?

I've noted there seem to be dozens of companies Web advertising their services in the regard. However, independent testimonials are probably more important to me than all the marketing brochures I could collect.

Specifically, I've just bought a custom '72 Z located in the San Francisco area and need to get it to Ohio. I fully intend to travel to CA to pick the car up and spend at least a couple of days getting used to it out there, but I'm hesitant to make the 2500 mile, 4-day trek eastward -- especially as the car has a Rebello street engine and no A/C. So shipping the car is a distinct possibility.

Any advice you folks could provide would be most welcomed.

First let me start with that I love to wander. An example is that on a Friday afternoon I drove from Sacramento into the center of Nevada. Spent the night by the side of the road, then the next day drove to the south rim of the Grand Canyon via the north rim then on to Las Vegas for the night. Then back to Sac by Sunday afternoon:love:

So I do like to travel, so to me I would at this as a great adventure. By flying to SF pick up the Z and head East on I-80. If you have problems rent a tow dolly and a small U-haul truck and bring her on home. If I was really comfortable with the car I would take HWY-50 which is more remote but follows the old Pony Express Trail. I have driven it east as far as Green River UT and other sections to Denver, but not east of the Rockies. If you like to see the old USA before all the Freeways this is the route for you.

To handle the heat in my Z I take of my shirt, soak with water, put it back on and it keeps me cool for about 50 miles.

I really don't want to ship the car but then, I've never driven 2500 miles going one-way in my life. It's that that has me concerned more than what it might do to the car. Especially problematic is the thought of Kansas and/or Nebraska. I went to grad school in Iowa and there was a reason why I never went any further west than Omaha.

I like your idea, Owen, of US 50. It might take a little more time than I-80, but it would make the interstate through either of the two aforementioned states seem like I was flying. And I'll surely have a plug-in cooler for water and snacks while I'm doing the drive. A T-shirt fresh out of the reefer sounds like a real pick-me-up.

ZmeFly, what route did you take in your '71? You must be training for an Ironman event doing 44 hours of driving in 60 hours of available time. How did you keep your sanity and concentration going?

Anyone else have comments? I'm still interested in hearing about car carrier experiences.

going from la i took 40 most of the way. keeping your eyes open and ready for the road is the biggest problem.

the main thing i think it is, is my love for driving. you must stay refreshed. thats a big thing. whenever i would feel tired, id go to the next rest stop. stretch a bit. go in wash my face and refresh myself.

my favorite thing to have for some reason i guess its like a religion is drinking sobe drinks.

from 40 there were small inbetweens then to 70 on home. i drove only about 6 hours the first night. the next day at 6am i left out to drive 17 hours each of the next two days. sleep time was about 4 hours a night max.

i just dont really know. when i get out on the road like that i get supercharged. driving across country isnt for everyone. me though i love it. made a couple of trips from way down south florida to pa in 19 hours eheheeh.

i guess i just get pumped up for the drive and go go go..

like i said its not for everyone. i would just feel funny with my car on a truck and worrying about it the whole time its coming home.

i did ship one car threw a carrier to a individual i sold it threw on ebay. he said the car arrived about 7 days later without any problems. so he had a good experience .

personally on that note i couldnt tell you.
