Yes -if you plan to keep it for a long time - take it all apart, put in on a rotisserie and strip the undercarriage down. Metal patch any area that is rusted, reseal any seams that need it. Then prime, POR-15 it and paint body color.

Actually, looking past the dirt and grime - it looks to be in fairly good condition.

If your going to go to all that trouble - make sure you take everything off that isn't welded on.

For Southern California, that car is nearly a disaster. Are they salting the roads up to Big Bear?

For the East Coast and Snow Belt, that's mild. Heck, I looked at this one kid's 240Z when I lived in Virginia. Apparently a previous owner lived in Chicago. I think there was more fiberglass than steel on the underside of that car. I'm not sure what the frame rails connected to.

I don't know how far you would like to take this car, but at the very least you should ensure it is, first safe, and second dependable. You have a better idea of the true condition of the underbody, because in the pictures we are seeing the remants of a previous owners rattle can work and a rainbow of corrosion. The best way to check the integrity of the front frame rails and shell is to clean it up and then evaluate it. I'm also looking past the crusty surface, maybe optomisticaly, but a judgment from just these pics can't be made with any degree of accuracy. I would at least pull the motor allowing you easier access and better attention to detail. Start cleaning, scraping, wire wheeling, sanding and use whatever other means you have at your disposal. Then put up some more pics, but by the time you have done this it will be obvious to you what you need to do. The good thing about this aproach is, it doesn't cost you much, you will become familiar with the car and be able to come up with a game plan.

Yo Surf, was the front half of the Z nosed in a mud hole or puddle by

chance?

Seems like the engine block appears to have a water line where the

corrosion ends or (comes up to) about the top of the oil filter.

Actually where did you find it, that might help?

Powdercoating everything on mine. Came out really nice and I believe it is worth it. Still have another trip to make which will include the transmission and differential cases along with many other parts.

barby27, if you don't mind me asking where did you get all the powder coating done at? Was the place you had the work done very expensive? Have you had any frame rail or floorboard(s) redone? I am just getting my "72" out of a very long storage and am in need of some direction of reputable places to seek work, information, and help. Thanks in advance. You can PM me if you want.....

P.S. Very nice job on the powder coating of your Z parts. They look fantastic….
