Dash Wire Harnesses - Differences?

I just picked up an underdash harness from Arne ( in beautiful condition!), that I was going to use to replace my early series 1 harness (production 1/70). The part numbers that are still on the replacement harness are 24013-E4650 and E4651, for the engine and rear harness connections. Many of the connectors for the engine and rear harness do not match up. What year harness does this come off of? I tried looking for these numbers off of the microfiche but couldn't find them.

I believe I have the E4600 harness (1/70 build date), whereas the one I just bought is E4601. The connectors on the 2 separate engine and rear harnesses (E4650 and E4651) look very different than my original one. I guess what I am trying to determine is can I make use of the replacement harness in an earlier model? I am hoping some of the electrical geniuses will chime in here, please!!!

Are you heading for strict build date correct? Or are you looking for everything functional and even some added updates?

Maybe it might be easier to find the Engine and Rear harnesses to match the one you have from Arne rather than the other way around. Normally it's the Dash harness that gets so cobbled up from amateur repairs.

Then again, post pictures of the connectors side by side and maybe we can assist in getting the engine / rear harness you have to work with the unmolested dash one.

Stephen, the harness pair I sent you was sold to me as correct for 9/70-12/70. I just reviewed my previous research on this subject (http://classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19793 - a long thread) which makes me believe that it should also work on 2/70-8/70 cars - in fact, since the earlier research indicated that the 4650 and 4651 numbers may have been used for both versions from 2/70-12/70, it may actually be a 2/70-8/70 part.

I had forgotten that the very earliest cars were different. My bad.

That previous research also tells me that the problem in making the dash harness I sold you work for a 1/70 car is in mating with the engine harness. The rear body harnesses are shown by Nissan to be all the same from 9/69-12/70. So your rear harness SHOULD mate up to the replacement dash harness just fine.

On the other hand, the engine harness for 2/70-12/70 is different than for your early car. Just what might be different, I don't know. But apparently connector type is one difference. Perhaps that's all there is, but I have no way to know for certain.

At this point, there are probably only three options, none are perfect.

1.) Find the proper 12/69-1/70 dash harness set. Probably hard to do, as there were probably only 1500 cars made with that harness.

2.) Find a good engine harness for 2/70-12/70. This may be a bit easier than option 1, but still will take a bit of work to find a good one. Ideally you'll want one for a manual transmission car, although I know from experience that an automatic harness will work. But there will be left-over wires under the hood, which is not optimal.

3.) Attempt to change the wiring connectors to match your existing engine compartment harness. I suspect this is possible, but would be tedious at best, as you'd need to positively identify each wire to make certain you moved it to the correct connector and pin location. There's a fair amount of risk involved, I think this would be my last choice.

Option 1 is obviously the best, but the proper harness in good condition will be difficult to find. I find it hard to recommend option 3, but it may still be viable. Option 2 isn't ideal, but might be the cleanest, if strict originality is not required.

Thanks, Arne, for your input. It is a nice harness, and if I can make it work, I would prefer to do so. I am going to take some pics of the connections and see if Enrique or someone will chime in with their thoughts on adapting the harness to fit the engine harness. If unable to do so, will see if I can find the appropriate engine harness.

If you are not overly concerned with originality, just buy a coupler kit. Do a web search. There are some that look period correct. They include the connectors and terminals, both male & female and some even include the crimp tool. It would take some carefull study of the wiring diagrams also. If you are concerned with originality, you bought the wrong IP harness and will have to find the correct one.

I'll be out early tomorrow, but when I get back in the evening, I'll continue. Unfortunately, that means I have to make it an early night tonight.

Hopefully the pages I posted from the Clymer's helps figure out a couple of them.

I also note that in a couple of the photos there are already what appear to be some matched numbers, i.e. 1 and 1; 2 and 2; and a 4 and 4. From what I can tell those DO match colors on both sides of the connector and the connector should mate up. Still working on others.

This one is tricky, any other sharp eyes out there?

Thanks, E and Geezer, am out of state until tonight will review the diagrams versus my car and see what I can do.

Geezer, at this point I have a potential replacement wire harness in great shape, whereas my original is not so great. Trying to see if i can modify it to work, might be easier than patching up my existing harness.

E, the numbers are from the old dash harness and engine harness behind the replacement harness. I numbered them when I took the dash off for restoration and pulled the harnesses apart.
