EI in my 73

I just bought an electronic ignition set-up that I think came out of a 77 or 78 280Z for my 240Z. I got the new dizzy, EI module, new rotor and new cap. My car ran before I tore it down, so the original points ignition still works.

My question is, would you leave the points ignition in and get the car running again, then do the upgrade with the motor back in the car, or is it such a major improvement (and as simple as the seller described it) that I should go right to the EI now?

Me personally? I prefer to make changes one at a time. That way if something doesn't work, you know what it is. I'd wait until you have the car running again before adding another variable to the mix.

I have the same question. I picked up a 1977 280Z dist with the small black module that mounts on the firwall next to the coil. Will that swap into my '73?

Thanks

There's a little more to the distributor you're describing. That 'small black module' you describe isn't a module, it's just a junction block. The actual 'module' that goes with that distributor is actually the transistor ignition unit (E12-27) that mounts under the dash on the passsenger side just ahead of the fusebox in a 280Z. You could use that setup but you'd need all the parts and you'd have to know how to do the wiring. You'd be better off with a ZX distributor.
