helopilot Posted March 16, 2008 Share #1 Posted March 16, 2008 Hi all,Been out of the 240's for a year or so and been messing with roadsters. My sister-in-law told me about a car a friend of theirs have and want to sell. The car is a '73 240. Car is silver and not messed with much. Looks like 123,000 miles. Silver with black interior. engine pretty dirty, Looks to be maintained pretty good. Owner wants it out of the garage. Has not been driven much in the last 16 years. Last tags in 2000. Car has been stored inside garage with gas drained except every year, they put fresh gas in it and drive it around the neighbor hood to keep it going. Has 4 screw round carbs, shafts a little loose. The car starts and runs very well. Someone bent the front bumper in a parking lot but didn't get into the hood or grill at all. The drivers corner of the bumber just pulled away from the fender a bit. There is some damage to the drivers door, as well as the drivers quarter panel. It was the wife who backed into it. Jam is fine looks and it real minor 2-3 hrs body work. Car has been painted once and needs repaint.I crawled all around the car today. Some flaking under the drivers floormats. Seems to be in the jute. Didn't poke with screwdriver but I think it is still pretty solid elswhere no rust. Nada. Rockers are excellent, batt tray has some flaking paint but no rust. Frame rails looked good. Under the spare was fine and under the rear hatch as well. Front fenders, and rear wheel arches. I couldn't find any cancer anywhere. I saved the best for last. Perfect dash door panels are 99 percent perfect. I saw a couple of small cracks right around the door lock but that was about it.The owner is asking $2300 what do you think?Last 2 things. looks like MSA front air dam and a huge yellow sway bar in the front, and some yellow sway bar in the back.ThanksPhil
Carl Beck Posted March 16, 2008 Share #2 Posted March 16, 2008 What do I think? - - 1) You should buy it - then resell for $5,500.002) I think that sounds way to cheap... must be something very wrong with it.....If I was looking for a good, rust free 240-Z, I most likely wouldn't even call about a car that the owner thought so little of... You can't buy a good body shell for $2300.00, let alone a sold 240-Z.......3) I think it's a shame that it is so hard and expensive to get a car shipped from OR to FL... Truckers just don't run that route... and they want a very high premium to go that far out of their normal routes.4) I think you should post some pictures and the owners phone number5) I think it's crummy that we don't get deals like that back East...6) I think that if the car is in OR of WA... I may have sold it to it's first owner...just some thoughts...FWIW,Carl B.

That wasnt door to door but depot to depot. I had to drive 15 miles to pick it up. While I didnt like the additonal cost, I really didnt think the price was all that bad taking everything into consideration, i.e., fuel costs, etc. The company was DAS and I was very happy with them. From depot to depot it was 3 days.
helopilot Posted March 16, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted March 16, 2008 Carl,Thanks for the words. I'll have to look a bit and post his number..... I e-mailed him last night and asked a couple of more questions. I guess I am going to take it off the market for now. I may clean it up and put it back out there or keep gas in it and drive it this summer. I live in Bend but my fire contract is in Grangeville Idaho. It would be a fun car to drive back and forth to Idaho where I work in the summer. I'm sure it would get better gas milage than my boxey little Honda Element. The car came from California I believe. The owner wants it out of there before their son turns 16 next month. Springbreak is week after next and they also want to re-claim some space.I took a couple of pictures before my batteries died. I added them to my webshots site. I'll post the link here. Also you can see my roadsters. Now I'll have to find a place to stash one till I get some work done on a Z.http://community.webshots.com/user/pdfenter?vhost=communityIt will be nice to get back in the saddle a bit. I really liked both '72's I owned. I love driving the Roadsters. Here on the dry East side of the mountains we get plenty of roadster days even in the winter. The blue car came from Virginia and your right shipping is tough to arange and pretty expensive. My 67.5 took 15 days to get picked up. I would drive a 240 across country in a heart beat. The roadsters are great cars for shorter jaunts. 200 miles in a day would be a long day. Carl If you want the car I could probably drive it out for you..ThanksPhil

zbane Posted March 16, 2008 Share #7 Posted March 16, 2008 ...3) I think it's a shame that it is so hard and expensive to get a car shipped from OR to FL... Truckers just don't run that route... and they want a very high premium to go that far out of their normal routes....Regarding 3) Second the thoughts on DAS. I had the M Roady shipped from Taos, NM to Delray Beach, FL for about $800. That was a "door to door" delivery, and took about a week. Since the car in question runs, shipping it shouldn't cost a fortune-last I checked there was a $200 surcharge for shipping a non-op car.It sounds as though the 16yo has a z itch, and the owner would rather not have a minor driving the car, the insurance would be mighty high...Good on you for picking it up, now you just need a larger garage... sblake01 Posted March 16, 2008 Share #8 Posted March 16, 2008 The owner is asking $2300 what do you think? It would already be at my home based on your description. I'd already have pictures posted in a new thread like "Just picked up another Z" or something like that.
Jeff G 78 Posted March 16, 2008 Share #9 Posted March 16, 2008 From your description and the pics, I am wondering why you are sitting at your computer posting when you should be at your bank withdrawing $2300. That car appears to be worth well over $2300. I'd say it's worth just about what Carl said ~$5500.
helopilot Posted March 16, 2008 Author Share #10 Posted March 16, 2008 Hi all,I thought I would at least let the guy have his coffee this am. It is going to be a done deal today. Now the part you are really going to hate.I figured if you thought it was a deal at $2300, actual price is $1500.:cross-eyeI post more pictures when I get it home this week. This should be a fun one I think. I'll go throw it on a trailer and drag it home this week. It could be driven I think, but 130 miles through the Cascades with the snow I saw yesterday is probably not the best idea.Ok, that settles it.:classic:Phil
