Posted August 20, 200222 yr comment_13561 How can I tell a 77-78 5spd from a 81-83 5spd transmission. Both units are out of the car. Is there some embossed marks that would identify one from the other? I want to get the 81-83 280z, 5spd. On the same subject what is a fair price for a junkyard 5spd transmission? The guy wants $450. Seems too high to me. Thanks GREG Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/2742-at-junkyard-which-5spd-tranny-is-a-81-83/ Share on other sites
August 20, 200222 yr comment_13571 Find a scrapyard where you can walk around and look at the stuff before it's pulled. I don't know the tranny numbers, but $450 is WAY too much. At a local U-pull-it yard in my area, I paid $70 for my BW T-5 (I pulled it myself). Another yard I frequent normally sells trannys for less than $100, again pulling it yourself. Usually you can get a yard to pull it for you for $50 or so.
