As some of you will be aware, there are 25 Rear Sway Bars for sale from this guy: http://www.240z.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3516&highlight=sway+bar : Anyway, seeing as theyre being sold for $140 off retail price, I was just wondering how effective they are?

Did 240Zs come with sway bars standard??? How much improvement can I expect with a rear sway bar but no front one? Do front sway bars cost much more/less than rear ones?

Early 240's before 72 didn't come with a rear bar standard (at least here in the US) but they all came with a front bar. Most of the time the front bar is a bit more expensive than the rear one.

If you run a rear bar without a front one you may end up with more oversteer than you would like. I'd either run just a front bar or as a pair. A lot of it will have to do with what size bar (or bars) you install.

If your car is an Australian-market HS30 then it really ought to have been fitted with a rear Anti Roll Bar ( "Sway Bar" ) from the factory.

The originals are quite a different shape to the aftermarket ones ( which were usually offered in the American market to allow the fitting of a rear bar where no mountings existed ). So be careful when thinking about purchasing one of the aftermarket types to fit on your particular car; you might receive the type that does not fit in the standard mount brackets on your chassis.

As I've said before on previous posts about the USA / North American market HLS30's - its strange how the factory thought that a rear bar would not be needed for that model. Was it just to save money and keep that dealer price down? Can't imagine it would have saved that much, and most of the S30-S, PS30 and HS30 models had them fitted as standard...........

Anyway Alfadog, check out whether you have the factory rear bar or at least the factory mount brackets before diving into the purchase of something that you either don't need or can't fit.

have a look at the lower suspension arm there is a short vertical link attached to the arm and one end of the sway bar is attached to it it then goes across the chassis mounted at two spots then attaches to the other side suspension arm the same way , my 260z rear bar is 20mm thick i don't know what it should be on an aussie 240z. put it up on ramps or stands and have a look arround its much easier to under stand than the pictures in the workshop manual.

Alfadog as I remember you were based on the Gold Coast.

Do yourself a favour and get yourself up to the Z Shop in Underwood/ Brisbane.

Alan Stean has been involved in rallying Z'ds for 25 years. He wiill look at your suspension setup and advise according to your budget and use.

He recently replaced my 71 z springs with King 200lb progressive type, fitted adjustable Koni shocks and changed front swaybar to 22mm and rear to 12 mm with urethane rubbers.

With 16x 6.5 Simmons wheels and 205x 50 series sticky Falken tyres this car can be thrown into most corners flat out.

I race this car at Willowbank and hold off some expensive historic machinary purely because this car handles so neutrally.

I also heard another story: if you use stiffer bars (24mm/more) they can ruin you shell. The connections come lose from the shell??

shows and aftermarket one. It is the one

most tuners will tell you to put on. It

doesn't put a load on your underbody like

the factory ones.

The above picture of the rusty sway bar in

the driveway looks like the Nissan one. That

one looks like it fits in the factory 240

frame mounts. The US late 260 bar won't fit

in the US market 240 mounts, its longer and

doesn't have the bent to clear the diff

housing. I tried pulling my 260 one and fitting

it to my 240 .
