Strange noise from engine compartment

Hi Guys,

I have a 78 280z 2+2 and recently I started to hear a strange noise coming from the engine compartment (high pitch screech ). It sound like a bad power steering unit, not that the my Z has one but, it comes and goes. This usually happens when in neutral and I rev the engine and as rpms go up it stops. It also, happens when I start driving from a standing position and I'm accelerating but once the clutch is fully engaged it stops. I've tried to isolate the noise but can't seem to find out where exactly it's coming from. If anyone has any thoughts I would appreciate the help.

Regards,

Rick :ermm:

It could be if the clutch is adjusted in such a way that the throwout bearing just touches the clutch when it's let out, I know mine makes a funny noise kind of like that but only when it's in neutral. It stops when I start moving. For me I think it's a bearing on my mainshaft. I probably need to change the oil in my transmission.

but mines quiet. From what you describe it's quite a loud sound. is it?

I had a similar situation a couple years ago. For me, the noise was on and off for a bit, but progressed to a full time thing. Turned out to be bad idler pulleys. I too couldn't find the source of the noise and ended up taking the car to a Nissan dealer as the noise had passed bearable.

it could be the fan clutch, i had that problem and the belt needed to be tightened. here is the sound I had.

wow, that sounds horrible!

I rebuilt my fan clutch not too long ago.

The issue with mine is hardly noticable, but from what he's describing, it's a really loud sound like yours. Guess we just have to wait for a sound bite.
