Stereo issues

Recommended Posts

OK Im restoring my 72 Z and am having problems with the stereo. It is the original and I get VERY low volume from the rear speaker. It does tune different stations, it does have volume control but it is VERY low...can barely hear it from the front.

Ive tried 3 different speakers so Im pretty sure thats not it.

Ive put 6 hours into it so far...any ideas??????

Thanks

Check the OHM and Wattage ratings for the speakers you've used. The original radio only put out 3.5W Mono and used only one 5-1/8" 4 ohm speaker.

If you try to use a stronger (wattage) speaker the radio can't drive it, same applies for the Ohm rating.

Only if you are using TWO 8 ohm speakers hooked up in parallel could you use an 8 ohm rated speaker, but even there you have to be careful not to step up the wattage requirement.

Check out Radio Shack. You can get a very inexpensive 4Ω 5-1/4" speaker with a rating of 5 or 10 watts which will be more than sufficient for the OEM radio for under $10 or so.

:nervous:ok well I got frustrated and did something crazy. I sprayed carb cleaner in the slide thing inside the stereo, now it works perfect. WTF?

i dont exactly know what i did but im gonna go back out in 1 hour and make sure it still works.

...by the way ALL 3 of the speakers I was using were trash. I cant believe it. what are the odds. ? One even came out of my Tahoe!

Dirty slides and contacts can act like resistors, so it's possible that the carb cleaner just got rid of some corrosion or wear, allowing good contact to happen, and for more current to flow.. and more current = more volume.

However, I don't think I would recommend the 'spray carb cleaner and see what happens' method.
