Pertronix upgrade on a 240z 72

Hi, I have a 240z 1972, I am building a new harness because the car i bought is missing all the electrical stuff, I just got the pretronix with a 1.5 ohms coil, If everything goes well i will be testing the new wires this weekend, so far i have the cables that go from the coil, alternator, starter, voltaje regulator, Amp meter, tachometer and the ignition switch, but i was wondering if i use the pertronix with the 1.5 coil do I still need the resistor? :surprised

Go to the Pertronix website and look up the technical info there. If you have a 1.5 ohm coil, you need to run the correct ballast resistor or your coil will overheat and/or burn out your Pertronix unit.

If your coil is the 3.0 ohm one, then no BR is required. I found my car ran better with the BR and 1.5 ohm coil, but my 3-ohm unit was used and maybe a little "iffy."

Search for Pertronix in the forums, and you'll get a lot of info.

Thank you all, I benn looking for the info about pertronix but it seem that some people use the pertronix setup with a 1.5 Pertronix Flame Thrower I coil and haven't had any problems, and in other post they use it with the 3 ohms coil, the problem is that i got the 1.5 one and here in Mexico is kind of hard to get this items. So if i use the 1.5 what will be the BR i will have to use?

That is not the recommended wiring for a 1.5ohm coil, but should work for a 3-ohm coil. Did you use the link I provided you?

If in doubt CALL Pertronix. They are quite comfortable answering your questions.

I just installed the Pertronix on my '73 240Z with a new distributor/Petronix coil and new resistor - happy to report this is the best my Z has ever ran - smoother idle, went from 12-14MPG to 20.5MPG for the same drive route. Great investment!

I recommend staying with the 1.5 Ohm coil, because I think your tach needs this setup. Correct me if you know that I'm wrong, but I think that the for the 240Z you need to maintain everything like the original setup, only changing the coil to a higher voltage. I believe you can also use 280Z spark plugs. I believe I'm using a coil for an early 80's Nissan truck.
