How many 240z's left?

From what I've been able to find on the web, it looks like there were 116,712 240Z's sold. (is this correct?)

I'm wondering how many 240's have survived. (Running or restorable). Anyone have a reliable estimate?

Just curious.

One of the books I have says 101,575. Another say a number somewhere near the one you posted. I've seen higher and lower. I doubt if you'll ever find a 'reliable' estimate of how many are left if there's no 'reliable' number of how many were built.

2 parts cars--10/70 and 2/72

1 restorable--6/73

1 daily driver--2/73

1 being restored--7/70

Now if everybody would chime in with their totals we can get a start on how many are still around!

Just somewhere around 116,707 or 101,570 left to locate!!

At zhome.com there is (was?) a register. Carl Beck can shurely say more about it. If all members here and other Zowners that they know would join that register we could get an imagination of the number.

The number I keep coming up with is around 162,540. That is 152,767 Left Hand Drive (at the most) and 9773 Right Hand Drive 240Z's (at the most) (be they Datsun or Fairlady).

So far we have VIN's recorded in the series, accounting for 148,957 HLS30's vs a total possible if all VIN's in the series were used of 152,767.(not likely but possible I guess).

So I think 150K units would be close for a generic number for Left Hand Drive + 9773 for the Right Hand Drive.. Call it 160K units for "240-Z" of all kinds world wide.

How many are left - Who Knows? It is no longer possible to ask the State DMV's for a records search - now that the Federal Government has declared these Public Records - Private...

After 35 to 38 years - I'd be surprised if 3% of them were still around. One thing is for sure - it's fewer of them every years.

Well, I've had four in my life.

71- used as a parts car then crunched

72- my first Z, started to restore but rusted beyond restoring, kept parts

72- shell bought for restoring with all the parts from the others, had kids

gave it away for some one that would do it right it but kept many parts

72- Kids grown up, out of college. Bought a few years ago, semi restored

body, paint and motor. Now restored as a great second daily driver.

After 20 years of no Z, enjoying the hell out of it.

Carl you said you think maybe 3% are still around. That would come out to some where about 4,000-5,000 there in some type of shape. How many first gen Mustang,s or Camero's do you think are out there?

Of the approximate 5000 240Zs that still exist, I would probably guess that less than half are even registered with the DMV and probably close to half of those cars are in California.

There are quite a number of them that have been stored away and all but forgotten also. I had the pleasure of seeing three 240Zs this past weekend that have been tucked away for 16 years (real time capsule). But these are overwhelmingly offset by the better than a few hundred being parted out yearly and the numbers will continue to steadily decrease in the coming years IMHO.

I think there will always be a demand for Z parts houses. They will keep the Z 's going that are restored or the ones that are being restored. Look at Year One, the specialize primarily in GM parts. Chevy and Camaro are their bread and butter. There are a whole lot less "road worthy" 1950's cars then there are Z cars. Eventually though father time will win.

Mine's not a 240 but I know father time is taking a hunk out of my buget trying to save one!

You are taking into account the many more 260 and 280s that are out there. Parts that fit only the 240 are becoming harder and harder to come by. I tell my friends buy them now and start stocking up for future use.
