Emblem Removal

What is the secret for removing the "240Z emblem" directly behind the quarter panel windows on the drivers and passenger side?

I have stripped the interior panels. The left side I can feel and barely see the aft pin which has some type of cone shaped lock on it. The right side is not accessible since it is buried behind the plastic vapor tank.

Same question for the "Datsun emblem" on the front fenders?

When I removed my quater panel ones I used a thin flat headed screwdriver and worked my way around it like taking off a hubcab it poped out easily, just be careful for your paint use a cloth or some thing under the screwdriver. The fender ones were a little more difficult. There is a pin located about 1/2-1 inch from each end, use the screwdriver from the top then the bottom to free it out a little then do the same on the other side, the pins may break. Just be careful or the whole thing may break in half.

I used a dull putty knife. I slid it under in the middle, between the posts, then gave a slight twist near each pole. A little on each pole till they were all the way out. No damage and everything was intact.

On the fenders, I was able to do the same but also was able to reach behind. I used a small allen wrench to poke through the metal clip and push the tabs out, on 2 posts I think.

I've had good luck using a good quality dental floss - work it under the emblem from one end or the other until you get to a pin and then gently pull toward you. After you lift it a bit, go to the other end and repeat the process - a little at a time, alternating ends of the emblem, working toward the middle. So far, no scratches or broken emblems.

I have always used one of the feeler gage blades that I don't need. I use a stepped feeler gage, and only need the 8/10 and the 10/12, so the rest are protection for those two, I figure, might as well use the rest for something! insert behind the emblem(cover the edges of the blade with a layer of painters tape to protect the paint, and pull her off!

I used the putty knife procedure suggested by Zs-ondabrain.

Used a flexible, SST 2" wide blade and inserted it between the two pins on the 240Z emblem and then shited to contact one pin. Gradual twisting got emblem to move and finally they popped off. Great advice.

Used same method on the "Datsun" fender emblems which have 3-pins and both readily popped off.

That rusty looking retainer was nasty.

Thanks for the input guys.

OK , so here's a dumb followup, how do you get those back on, as in how do you make em stay on? I have a series one 240Z emblem for behind the rear quarter windows, have never been able to figure out how to make it stick there, it just keeps falling out.

Ya need one of those "Rusty nasty looking retainer clips" per emblem stud. SOmeone here should chime in on where to find them. Maybe an automotive paint supply store, as they deal with emblem removal and installing with paint jobs.

They are small Barrel looking clips that are made of a spring material to hold them into place with pressure.
