Fixing steering wheel cover

Hey all,

I just found a neat way to repair the steering wheel center/horn button. Mine would not stay on. When I flipped it over there were three cracks in the plastic. I figured some plastic model glue would fix it right up. After carefully applying the glue I was faced with having to hold it until the glue set up. Not being a real patient person I needed a clamp quick. My wife is in class today so I headed for the kitchen. I thought if I could find a bowl or something it would hold all sides equally. I found a 2 cup clear measuring cup with a spout. The sides are tapered nicely and the part fit perfect. Put it inside helped my son the 7 year old clean his room and it worked great. Re-installed and it holds on the wheel nicely.

Just thought I'd share. Sure glad the wife was out:bandit:

Phil;

If the plastic insert breaks again, you can give it added strength with a pair of nylon wire ties the Zip-Strip variety.

If you use the "flush" style it makes it a bit easier to tighten up, but IME the 90° seem to have a stronger hold. Usually only two or three are needed to wrap completely around the plastic insert.

I've used JB Weld before to repair and fill in missing material from pieces of plastic that have fallen off.

I used JB-Weld and a piece of rope & screwdriver - Put rope around after putting in the epoxy and tighten with a screwdriver (just like getting a tire to take a bead on a rim when adding air..... Beats spending a wad of cash for a new one....

I enjoy seeing what can be done. I drove my car around yesterday and it stayed on fine. I always figure if it is broken try to fix it before before just buying new.

When I got my 67 roadster the headlights didn't work. New switch was pretty much unobtanium. 1-2 hrs later I had the old switch cleaned up and it works pretty well.
