Is FI worth it

Hey, ive been geting my 260Z back to road worthiness and recently my grandfather decided to help out. he ended up buying me a complete fuel injection manifold. I have some 4 screw round top SU's right now, but it would be nice to have fuel injection. How much trouble would it be to put on the FI. i dont have the wire harness for the FI just the manifold. Thanks in advance

If you are converting to EFI, you might as well go with a stand alone system like Megasquirt. Saying that, Stephen is correct in that converting to EFI is a lot more than simply bolting on a manifold and adding injectors.

agreed

both these guys are right; fuel injection is a lot more involved than simply swapping manifolds. you are going to have to factor in replacing the entire fuel system, even back to the tank (unless you build a surge tank). not only that, whether you go wth the stock electronics or an aftermarket EMS you are going to be running a lot of wires and hooking up sensors.

if you are thinking about doing an EFI swap you should check out hybridz.org and go to the aftermarket EMS forum.

Aftermarket EMS, though more costly, would be easier to set up. At least, the electrical part of it would. The old Z/ZX/810/Maxima EFI system is somewhat antiquated. My cars already have it so I've learned to work with it and live with it. If I was going to convert a non EFI car to EFI, I would definately go with something more modern. You can tune an aftermarket stand alone system with your laptop!

My first '71 had been 'converted' to injection, using the system from an '83 ZX. Yes, it worked. But it was a total mess with new wires and such all over the place. I ended up converting back to SUs. In my experience, trying to retrofit the later injection to an earlier car is more trouble than it's worth. Like everyone else here, if I wanted injection on an early carb'd car, I'd go aftermarket as well.

Yeah, I've got a comlete EFI harness somewhere as a spare for my 78. If you take a look at that thing, it gives you no clue of how it should be routed and I would think that the only way you could even be close is to have a complete EFI car, harness in place, next to the one that you're converting for comparison. I still wouldn't want do it!

Agreed, Stephen. But not possible when attempting to retro-fit the system from an S130 into an early S30. The guy who did it was force to make it up as he went. The results were not pretty.
