August 25, 200222 yr comment_13987 $900 for an alternator???? That's outragious. And unnecessary unless you plan on making your Z into an electric car.:cross-eye Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/2792-aftermarket-alternators/#findComment-13987 Share on other sites
August 25, 200222 yr Author comment_13991 Currently, the lights run dim at idle at 800rpms. At 1000, the lights are fine. I have HELLA E-spec H4 w/55-65 watt bulbs. If I change the pulley size, smaller, then I should have enough juice to power everything at idle.Who makes aftermarket pulley wheels?Has anyone tried that? The upgrading to a higher amp alternator may not be necessary. August 26, 200222 yr comment_14063 Chevy alternators need only 1 wire to hookup into your electrical system & have an internal voltage regulator. One of the engine swap guys could tell you how to hook it up. They come in different Amp sizes, but you'd need one that will fit physically, too. The only tough part would be to ge t the right mounting bracket. August 26, 200222 yr comment_14065 If your lights and gauge shows everything OK at above 1000 rpm. I think you are OK as is. I wouldn't worry about the lights being dim at idle. That is normal for most vehicles. Especially older ones.
