I have a 76 280z with a Z specialties one wire alternator. When driving the car with no other electrical load, sometimes it will chugg/hesitate at around 2500 rpm, if I stomp on the gas it stops the hesitation. But when the headlights or the blower fan is on, it wont behave like this. Could this be a bad connection somewhere?

EDIT: Another explanation I could think of is with the other electrical load, the temp rises to about the middle of the gage because of the increased load on the alternator. The temp sensor is new. Could the increase in temp make it run leaner if it was hesitating from running rich?

Did you ever solve this issue. I have a Z specialties alternator as well and am experiencing the same problem from around the same rpm range up to about 4000 RPM and then it goes away. In may case, it gets worse with any extra load (i.e., lights, turn signals, stereo, etc.). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I realize this is a zombie thread.

Even so, were I to encounter this problem, first thing I'd do would be to disconnect the alternator entirely. Run strictly on battery. Rule the alternator in/out as the source of problems.

So I disconnected the alternator and the problem continued and actually was worse. I'm running the Crane XR3000 and PS91 electronic ignition setup. I'm thinking it may be related to that, but not sure how to verify it.
