Headlights won't turn off

I took the Z out for the first real shake down run today. :nervous: Drove for about an hour and everything was good.

Everything worked great, I just had one issue. My headlights wouldn't turn off when I got home. All of the lights were replaced with new, and they all worked perfectly, just the headlights won't shut off. I took out the fuses to shut them off for the night. I searched the forum and couldn't find this issue.

I assume its probably the headlight switch on the steering column. Any other possibilities?

I had the same problem, but they wouldn't turn on. Take the switch apart and clean the contacts. I think MikeW did a write up. I used the search "combo switch" to find it. Sure would like to be taught how to post links, I'm so computer stupid.

Update, the wipers don't want to turn off either, had to pull that fuse also. Same switch, thats gotta be it. I downloaded Mike article, and I'll tackle that tomorrow. Thanks.

It is the switch. The contacts are controlled by a plastic bullet shaped ball loaded with a spring. Occasionally, they fall out or the small pastic lip that retains the ball, breaks off and then they fall off, leaving the contacts connected in the On or Off position.

Pull it apart and see what's up. You may need a new switch if it's what I think it is. If not, just place everything back where it's supposed to be.

If you need a new switch, contact me about replacing it or possibly rebuilding it. I have the parts you need. If it needs replacing, or rebuilding, send it to me and I'll have it all back together and working like new for $50. Better than paying $150 for a hard to find NOS combo switch.

Yeah, do the rebuild. I had issues with mine and the dissassembly/reassembly was a piece of cake (and I'm a bit of a noob).

I did the work today, and it solved the problem of the lights not going off. But I took the wiper side of the switch all apart, cleaned all the contacts, and they are still stuck on.

I'd guess the wiper relay may be bad.

You can see if it's the switch by unplugging the connector that's under the steering column, since it goes to the switch. It the lights still stay on, then there must be a problem elsewhere.

Hey Tom, He already fixed the lights, It's the wipers that won't shut off now.

Weasel, I think the switch is still broken, Try it again. And look for any solder joints that may have flowed into another connection. I rebuild them all the time and have found this issue more than once.
