240Z starter on l28

Is the 240Z starter from my 240Z auto man enough to crank the L28 with a 1mm slimmed head?

In fact it's not even turning the engine at all at the moment!

The starter is fine and was OK on my 240Z engine...???? I took it off and it run OK

I can turn the engine with 30 lb/ft on my spanner????

When I turn the key, I hear the cliks... it turn 1/4 max and nothing more????

Could it be the battery? I am not speaking about starting the enging... just turning it at the moment

A lot of people like to use the late 280z or 280ZX starter since it's a gear reduction starter. I've always had those starters in both of my cars (the Z and the 810). Both basically stock so I don't have anything to compare it to.

My concern is that it doesn't move the "=§*** thing at all?????

The starter I mentioned is 'supposed' to have more torque. Like I said, I don't have anything to compare it to. Hopefully someone else will answer.

Why don't you try another battery? Or put some jumper cables to it?

So is the starter trying to rotate at all after the initial quarter-turn or does it just crap out at that point?

ya, sounds like either a corroded/loose cable or a dead/dying battery to me... double check all of the cables; heck, disconnect all of them and give them a good scrub with some sandpaper. make sure your ground is solid and touching bare metal. it sounds like the starter isn't getting enough juice

No, I'll tell you what I'm thinking -- I'm thinking a starter gear and a flywheel that, for whatever reason, aren't meshing right. The Bendix turns just a little and then everything binds.

Of course, I'll be the first to admit I don't know if that's even a possibility here. But I don't want to discount it, either.

A starter for a 240-Z will crank your L28 with no problem. Stock 240-Z starter will crank my L24 with 13:1 compression, and my L28 with 10:1 compression.

If yours will not - you have some other problem.

Ok Carl, you have a 240Z starter on a high comp engine and it turns okay so I will double check the connections and try with a biefier battery then...

What size should I aim for...

Here's a thought - the 240Z came with different starters (and solenoids) for manual and automatic transmissions. I've always assumed that the difference was in the throw of the bendix drive. The later cars used the same starter regardless of transmission. So if you have swapped from automatic to manual transmission on your car, you may need a different starter.

From 78-83 (84 if you include the Maxima) they used a gear reduction starter. It is a better starter but that's not to say that the earlier one is a bad starter. If I had an earlier S30, and I had to buy a new starter anyway, I'd go with the later one.
