JonnyRock Posted May 15, 2008 Share #1 Posted May 15, 2008 I recently bought a radar detector for my 300 mile commute home that a make a few times a year. But I ran into a problem when I plugged it into my cigarette lighter socket. It doesn't come on.I tried it in my gf's Jetta and it works fine. My cigarette lighter itself is also working fine, so I'm not sure what's up. Is it not providing enough power to the detector? Are the contacts not lining up because it's an old style socket?Has anyone else encountered this? Dave, have any ideas?

Zs-ondabrain Posted May 15, 2008 Share #3 Posted May 15, 2008 Sounds like an oblong to me. Try cleaning the center contact, in the lighter hole. I've found that some plugs work and some don't. You just have to compare the adaptors to see why one works and the other does'nt.So I take it the lighter itself works? If so, that'll suck more power (amperage) than the Radar detector will. The lighter, in essence, is a short circuit, and that's what heats up the lighter. So it's most likely a fitment issue.Dave.
